ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

October 31, 2006

I'm back! After two weeks of sheer joy and contentment in the beautiful
Great Smoky Mountains, and surrounding area, (Go Vols!) I'm ready to ramble,
and ramble, and ramble.

First, I want to thank Sue Miller for writing the Rotary Ramblings the first
week, and Kurt Godfrey for writing last week. (Now you both will be vying
for the job, huh?)

Our noon meeting was presided over by our illustrious president, Dave
Armstrong. He called on a real professional for the invocation; Rev. Roger
Richardson. Sam Altdoerffer did a terrific job leading the singing. (I
guess you know, Jimmy Weatherspoon hung around outside the door, waiting for
Sam to take over. Just kidding.) I hear Bruce Williams has been away, and
that you poor birds had to try to sing without his accompaniment. We must
forbid him from going away again.

We had three people celebrating their birthday; Sue Miller, who donated
$46.00; Bruce Wenzel, who donated $66.00 (even though that's not his age);
and Roy Simon, who came in with a whopping $76.00.

Harvey Brown did a great job welcoming visiting Rotarians and guests. He
even paid tribute to Mark Denkler, for wearing a tie today. (I didn't know
they made ties long enough for him!) One of our guests was Allen Cornblau
(sp?), the new Director of Delray Beach Library. President Armstrong
presented him a check for the library for $1,000.00, and an invitation to
become a member of Delray Beach Rotary Club.

Fred Bonardi gave the stock market report, stating the market is quiet
today.  He did state, for the year, the DOW is up 13%; the NASDAQ     up 7%;
and the S&P 10%.

Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, gathered in a total of $244.00 today. Lyn
Huckle gave $20.00 for "Go Blue;" along with the three birthdays. Inga
Talman paid for a banner that she didn't have the pleasure of presenting; no
new guests.

Steve Bates presented our Student of the Month, Altanese Jean-Louis, who is
a senior at Atlantic High School. This young lady aspires to receiving a
degree in Criminal Law. She is a member of NHS; NHR; works with MADD DADS,
and many more achievements too numerous to mention. She was very proud to
present her choice for Teacher of the Month, Morisa Fontaine, who has been
at Atlantic High School for seven years. She is the Guidance Sponsor for
the Graduating Class of 2007. We congratulate both of you.

Deborah Ferrell and Kay Johnson have been working diligently, readying the
backpacks for Nassau. These will be carried over by our District 6930, as
they venture on their Rotary Cruise, this Friday.

Other upcoming events:

Rotary Club of Delray Beach, in conjunction with Community Child Care Center
(current name), will hold their big fundraiser on November 18th. For those
of you, who need further information, please be at next week's meeting.
President Armstrong will give you further details about this outstanding
event.

Tuesday, November 21, will be our Service Above Self Award Luncheon at Old
School Square; time is 11:30 a.m. You don't want to miss this quite
prestigious event, honoring Delray Beach's own Bob Miller.

Sally Dye has asked me to remind you that the new, updated inserts for our
blue membership information book is available. (This is information and
pictures of our newest members.) Please pick up your copies ASAP. She's
tiring of carrying them around each week.

Eric Meyer had the winning ticket, but did not pick the Ace of Spades; the
"green hat," now exceeds $832.50.

Kurt Godfrey had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, our own Dave
Richards. He is the president of Florida First Insurance Company, here in
Delray Beach; has lived here for ten years. He has been married to Linda
for 32 years.

Dave Richards is what Rotary is all about; Service Above Self! This man is
the best ambassador we could possibly have to represent Rotary, and our
club. Last year, he went to India; got involved in helping get many of the
people "into business" by paying for carts to be built, so they could sell
their wares. He went to the New Orleans/Mississippi Delta area after
Katrina smashed it up; did hands on work with the people. He just returned
from Honduras, where he helped drill water wells for the people of that poor
country. He stated that 50% of hospital beds, around the world, are filled
with people suffering with water borne disease. Only 10% of the world has
clean water. While working in the New Orleans area, he met a man that owns
"Well Spring of Life." This man took his water drilling rigs to Honduras,
to help the people there.

Dave, with Kurt's assistance, gave us a slide presentation of his trip to
Honduras. After arriving in Honduras by plane, it was a five hour trip in
the back of a pickup truck to their destination. These people live in a
really remote area. After digging down 80 feet, to clean water, they
install the pumps to pull up the water the last ten feet; the pressure
brings it up to there. Then, they build community showers for the people.
The hired help receives $3.00 daily. At the end of the week, Dave stated
they tipped the help, more than their week's wages.

Our club is looking into sponsoring part of this International Project,
along with grant money from Rotary Foundation.

Dave Richards says he is proud to be a Rotarian, and when he says it, it is
in all sincerity, with passion, and a tear in his eyes. We are proud to
have Dave as a fellow Rotarian.
