ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
November 7, 2006
Our meeting was presided over by President Dave Armstrong. Jim Pignato gave
a lovely invocation; Sam Altdoerffer did a great job leading the singing,
trying desperately to teach "old dogs new tricks." As usual, Bruce Williams
was in rare form with his entertainment. We sang Happy Birthday to Mark
Denkler, who donated $45.00 to the club.
Harvey Brown, after thundering applause, welcomed a host of visiting
Rotarians, and friends, from as far away as Finland and Germany. Bill Arnst
had the opportunity to exchange banners with one of our guests from Finland.
Makeups were done by Harvey Brown, Ellie, and Nancy Owens (5 times).
Georgina Rice gave a stock market report, with "the big three" all showing
"up," but promised us that the day after the election would make a big
difference.
Janet Powell, Sergeant at Arms, announced she "banked" a total of $147.00;
with Mark Denkler donating $45.00 for his birthday, and Lyn Huckle
supporting "Big Blue" with $20.00; among all the other donations.
We wish to thank Deborah Ferrell and Kay Johnson for their efforts in
preparing the backpacks that were taken to the Bahamas and distributed to
young school children there. (A program of the District 6930 Cruise will be
given by President Dave Armstrong and Kurt Godfrey at a later date.)
Our next upcoming fundraiser event is with the Community Child Care Center,
Saturday, November 18; I'm sure each of you has received your invitation.
They, of course, are continuing to seek sponsors for this event. A complete
list of the donors will appear next week.
We received a thank you note from Delray Beach Public Library, and their new
Director, Allan Cornblau. Our club presented him with a check for $1,000.00
last week.
On November 21, 11:30 a.m.our club with be meeting at Old School Square, for
our tenth Service Above Self Award, honoring Bob Miller. Please bring your
"lunch money" of $15.00, next week, so Sally Dye may have this ahead of
time, in order to omit a "bottleneck" at the front door of the gym on the
day of the event. This makes everything work much smoother. Ellie's will
be catering another fine luncheon at the site.
Betsy Owen, Assistant District Governor, District 6930, had the honor of
introducing our guest speaker, Dr. Deri Joy Ronis. Dr. Ronis is a Peace
Psychologist who specializes in peace studies and conflict resolution. She
has helped bring joy to businesses, schools and individuals in Palm Beach
County for more than 20 years, by mediating problems.
She recently received the Rotary International Scholar Professor and
Goodwill Ambassador Award. She will get a $12,500 grant and spend a
semester teaching conflict resolution and group dynamics to university
students in the developing country of Belize, at Galen University, in San
Ignacio. She is very excited about this and acclaims: "this is an
opportunity of a lifetime."
Dr. Ronis holds several college degrees, including a bachelor's in bilingual
educational studies, and a doctorate in International Peace Studies, and
Conflict Management. She's also a published author. She believes that the
situation in the world is not too far gone, especially when there are
organizations such as Rotary International helping to establish pockets of
peace all over the world.
Upon her fulfillment of this opportunity, she will be looking forward to
becoming a Rotarian; looking at our own Rotary Club of Delray Beach.
It was brought to our attention that Regie Moorcroft, widow of our beloved
Rel Moorcroft, recently donated $500.00 to our club. The love and support
of Rel continues through Regie; we thank you.
