ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
November 14, 2006
Our Board of Directors met at 7:30 a. m. at Ellie's Marilyn Room. I stress
that all membership is welcome to attend these very informative meetings.
All new members are urged to attend, to find out how diligently your
officers work.
At the board meeting, it was decided to make the water drilling project in
Honduras our International Project. Dave Richards has been down there, and
plans to go and help drill the wells next spring. The wells cost $3,000.00
per well; we hope to solicit enough funds from our District to drill two
more wells. Our president is following protocol to procure these funds.
Also, it has been decided that our club participate in the "Souper Bowl of
Caring," which culminates on Super Bowl Sunday, February 4th. Dave Richards
will tell us more about this as January arrives. Bill Morse is updating our
financial records, in order to present to the club, an accurate accounting
of our finances, in the near future.
At noon, President David Armstrong was once again at the helm, presiding
over our meeting. Hack Allen gave the invocation; Sam Altdoerffer, again,
did a good job leading the chorus. At times, however, he is left singing a
solo (which he does well). Bruce Williams, as usual, makes us all feel like
dancing, with his wonderful renditions of old melodies.
Harvey Brown, patiently waiting for all the applause to die down, warmly
greeted our visiting Rotarians and friends. Georgina Rice presented
visiting Rotarian Edgar Seined with our banner; he in turn, presented his
club's banner.
At this time, I am publishing Alan Kornblau, Director of Delray Beach
Library, for membership. He will be inducted in the following weeks.
Tony Allerton was able to collect a total of $113.00 today, despite the fact
that there were no birthdays or anniversaries. Lyn Huckle came through with
$20.00 again, in support of "Big Blue" (Michigan). It's interesting, at
this point, that people are giving money for the popcorn popper, and others
are giving money, supporting rental of a popper, for the first year. Either
way, the coffers are popping!
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18, our largest fundraiser of the year, with Community

(If I have omitted any sponsor, please let me know.) We thank each of you
for your generosity, and for all the volunteers that will be helping make
this another successful year for CCCC and our Rotary Club.
Kurt Godfrey presented a short movie of the Community Child Care Center (to
be renamed at next Saturday's event). Nancy Hurd has been providing
resources for the children/parents of Delray Beach for over 36 years. In
this time, the families they have helped to get off welfare have remained a
record 100%. This is a phenomenal record of success. They now also sponsor
the Beacon Center. The children range from pre-school to teen years. This
is a large undertaking for one small group, but their success story
continues to grow. They boast an increase in graduation; a decrease in
crime, with the children they work with. If you haven't taken time to visit
this center, I suggest you do so; it will warm your heart.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Next Tuesday, November 21, we will meet at 11:30 a.m. (on the
front walkway; Southside) at Old School Square. This will be our Service
Above Self Award Ceremony. Please try to be on time; this is so important
that our club be well represented for the ceremony.
We will be presenting our tenth check for $1,000.00 to Joe Gilley, Director
of Old School Square, honoring our tenth recipient, Mr. Bob Miller.
For those of you that might not know Bob Miller (Robert Paul Miller), he is
a well known business man in Delray Beach. He has served the community
well, in many capacities. He has either chaired, or presided over every
worthwhile organization in the area. He has been a State Farm Agent for 39
years (winning many awards in his field of work). He was a teacher and
baseball coach at Atlantic High School, much of the time as a volunteer. He
was Manager, and Coach Training Consultant for the Southern Region
Headquarters of Little League International for 15 years. In 1976, a 25
acre recreation site in Delray Beach was named Robert P. Miller Park, in his
honor. He is Past President and Director of Delray Beach Chamber of
Commerce, winning Small Business Person of the Year, in 1993. The list of
accomplishments goes on and on. I'm sure you will find this man a warm,
loving, caring, vital part of our community. By the way, his passion is
fishing; somehow he finds time for that!
Lunch will be served in the Gym, after the ceremony. If you did not pay in
advance, please be prepared to pay Sally Dye ($15.00) at the door. You
won't want to miss this event; bring a friend. ( Remember: 11:30 a.m.)
