speaker, Daniel Biaggi, Director of Artistic Operations at Palm Beach Opera,
and his "assistant" Kirsten (Mrs. Tom) Stanley. (Picture courtesy of Kurt
Godfrey.)

President Dave Armstrong presided over a 7:30 a. m. board of directors
meeting, prior to our noon meeting.
At our noon meeting, Rev. Roger Richardson gave a very moving invocation.
Then, Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in a couple of our favorite songs. As
always, Bruce Williams, keeping in the holiday season, entertained us. We
sang Happy Birthday to Georgina Rice and Jess Sowards. Georgina announced
her retirement from Merrill-Lynch; after all, she must be 92, since she
donated a generous $92.00. (Just kidding, Georgina.) Jess donated $48.00;
thanks to both of you, and Happy Birthday.
Hack Allen has asked for volunteers to give the invocation; please see Hack
to sign up.
Harvey Brown, amidst resounding applause, stepped to the podium to welcome
one visiting Rotarian, Shane Moore. Georgina had her colleague, Andy
Friedman, with her today, trying to entice him to become a Rotarian.
We had a health report on Bill Morse. We hear that Bill is coming along
well at this point, and hopes to be back with us soon. Also, we hear that
Nancy King is progressing, and looking forward to being back with us. We
are keeping them in our prayers.
We had two make ups: Sylvia Pecaro and BRUCE WENZEL online (can this be
true, about Bruce?)
Fred Bonardi gave the stock report first, reporting the market was down a
bit since he had left the office a few minutes prior. However, for the
year, the DOW is up 15%; the NASDAQ up 11%, and the S&P up 13%.
Then, Fred switched hats, to Sergeant at Arms, reporting a total of $196.00
for the day. Rev. Roger Richardson gave $5.00 to wish all a Merry
Christmas.
Nancy Owens and her "assistants" Bob Teninga, Candace Etzler, Leo Phillips,
Roger Richards and Janet Powell have been going to the local third grade
classes and handing out dictionaries to each third grader. This is always a
very rewarding project. We thank each of you for being a true Rotarian.
A great time was had by all who attended our annual Christmas/Holiday Party
at the Delray Golf Club Restaurant. The food was good; the band was good;
the friends are priceless. Lyn Huckle had more fun than anyone there; Lyn,
thanks for "heading up" this event.
Kurt Godfrey introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Daniel Biaggi, Director of
Artistic Operations at Palm Beach Opera. In this capacity he assists with
the selection of operas, the casting of the productions and almost all
artistic needs of the organization. Mr. Biaggi is a classically trained
singer who had engagements in New York and Europe. He was on the faculty of
Julliard School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. He did
performance coaching for singers, with an emphasis on language diction. He
speaks four languages fluently. Mr. Biaggi was also an Artist Manager at
Guy Barzilay Artists in New York, managing the careers of over 40 singers
worldwide.
I observed Mr. Biaggi as very enthusiastic, with lots of charisma; he loves
what he does. He has been with the Palm Beach Opera one year now, and loves
being in South Florida. He fell in love with the area, while here working on
the opera, "Carmen."
The Palm Beach Opera was formed in 1961, and supports 22 employees. They
present four operas yearly. This may be extended in the near future,
however. They also hold two children's performances. They do have their
own orchestra, which is a real plus.
The performances for this season are:
December 8-11: Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci
January 26-29: Thai's
February 23-26: L'Italiana in Algeri
March 23-26: Madama Butterfly
Mr. Baggai's assistant for today was Kirsten (Mrs. Tom) Stanley. Kirsten is
an avid fan of the Palm Beach Opera, and assists in many ways. (It's a pity
that Tom had another engagement for the day; however, we thank him for such
a fine speaker.)
For more information, and tickets: 561-833-7888, or www.pbopera.org.
Our Green Hat proceeds now exceed $1,369.00; a great gift for some lucky
winner, soon. We are almost out of cards! (Sorry, Stormi.)
Kurt is working on a surprise entertainer for next week!
