ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

January 16, 2007

Rotary began early today, for some of us. President David Armstrong was
back at the helm; holding our monthly Board of Directors meeting, at 7:30
a.m. Many Rotary events, projects, issues, information, etc. are planned,
discussed, resolved, and sometimes, further discussed at these meetings.
This information is then brought to the club. Next month, the meeting will
be held on February 20, per President Armstrong's request. All members are
invited and encouraged to attend these meetings.

President Armstrong also led the noon meeting; consisting of a "full house."
We had at least twelve visiting Rotarians, plus their guests.

Dave O'Connell gave the invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon was back, leading
the singing, without his eyeglasses. (Be sure, we sang what he had
memorized.) We sang Happy Birthday to Leo Phillips, who graciously donated
$62.00. Bruce Williams kept us entertained, during lunch, with his lovely
renditions.

Harvey Brown, in his usual "solemn" manner, greeted the flock of guests. As
I have mentioned, there were many. Make ups were done by Janet Powell,
Candace Etzler and Mike Campbell.  We thank each of you for your efforts;
keeping your commitments as good Rotarians. We had another prospective
member visiting today, Craig Hammett, a guest of Bob Tinenga.

We received a check from (as we fondly know them) Community Child Care
Center, for the hard work our club did to raise funds for them in October.
The check was for $4,935.98; our part, for participating. President
Armstrong read a thank you letter from CCCC for our constant support.

Cliff Ripley gave $5.00 to announce that Leo Phillips is now on the Board of
Directors for the Scholastic Scholarship Awards of Palm Beach County. As
most of you know, Cliff is the founder of this wonderful organization that
recognizes outstanding students each year, and awards scholarships, for the
past thirty years. Our club Board of Directors voted to donate $500.00 to
this foundation, as is a yearly practice.

I know some of you have missed seeing Lyn Huckle at our meetings, recently.
She is not well at this time. She will be having spinal surgery on February
1; keep her in your prayers. We have other members in our club that are not
well at this time, and are on Leave of Absence. Take a few minutes and let
these people know we are thinking of them.

This morning, a new program was formed, to educate our members, regarding
becoming a Paul Harris Fellow. This is headed up by Bill Adams. You will
hear more about it in the future.

Dave O'Connell and Ernie Simon will host meetings for new members; to help
educate them about Rotary, and their involvement.

Joyce Lunsford was appointed Chairperson of the Greeting Committee. She
will ask individuals to be "greeters," at the front entrance, on a rotating
basis. I noted that she's already collecting names on her roster.

Dave Richards gave us an update on our "Wells Spring of Life," our Honduras
project. He noted that the more volunteers they procure, the more water
wells they can afford to drill. He and David Armstrong are "digging through
the legal system" to acquire matching grants from our District 6930. Dave
Richards has physically helped drill wells in Honduras, and is looking
forward to going back to help drill more. He also donned his "Dolphins"
shirt, soup pot in hand, and collected money for the Souper Bowl of Caring.
He will do this throughout the month of January. The money will be tallied
into the national count, then, given to our local Caring Kitchen. So, let's
all pitch in and help "stir the soup."

Announcements: February 18, our International Rotary President, Bill Boyd
will be at the Signature Grand, in Davie; cost: $60.00. More details later.

As you may have noticed, Assistant Governor Betsy Owen has new cards,
announcing she will be our District 6930 Governor in 2008-2009;
congratulations to Betsy.

Our guest speaker today was Colonel Arthur DeRuve. He was commissioned a
Second Lieutenant through the college ROTC program. After serving two years
with the 2nd Armored Division, as a Cold War soldier in Germany, he remained
28 additional years in the Army's Active Reserve, including eleven years as
Military Academy Liaison Officer for West Point. He holds a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Political Science, and a Masters Degree in Public
Administration. He has too numerous experiences to mention in this article.
He spoke on "War Against Terrorism, WWIV." He stated, in the beginning,
these were solely his own views, that he has no political agenda. He gave
us his views on the Cold War of the 1980's; leading up to events we face
today, in our war on terrorism.

Our Green Hat now holds $1,583.00; Cliff Ripley, not picking the Ace, led us
one card closer to a big winner, soon!
