ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
January 30, 2007
President David Armstrong presided over our last meeting of the month. Leo
Phillips gave a good "Rotary" invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in
singing. As always, Bruce Williams entertained us royally.
Alan Kornblau is celebrating his birthday this week. I'm sure being a new
member, he did not know that donating $10.00 would not spare him from us
singing Happy Birthday to him; we did it in grand style. Happy Birthday,
Alan!
Our debonair greeter, Mr. Harvey Brown, sauntered to the podium to greet a
plethora of visiting Rotarians. Among them were our two international
guests, Jeff Dennis and Oswald Wertz. David Harden was the only make up; he
visited Sunrise Rotary. Fred Bonardi paid for a banner that he did not give
away.
Fred Bonardi, wearing many hats today, first gave the stock report; stating
the stocks were up, making it a very positive report.
Fred then switched hats, and gave the Sergeant at Arms report. It seems he
did quite well today, collecting $120.00 for the club, and Dave Richards,
with his big soup pot, collected $113.00 for the Souper Bowl of Caring.
During the month of January, Dave stood by, wearing his Dolphin shirt,
holding his soup pot, and collected a total of $539.00, which will be
donated to the Caring Kitchen, after Super Bowl Sunday. Dave, thank you for
your efforts. It was good to see John Arnold back with us today, looking so
well. He also donated $10.00 to the "Rel Fund."
Among our ailing, is Lyn Huckle, who is now in Boulevard Manor, recovering
from her back surgery, and Bruce Galloway. Keep them in your prayers.
Nancy Owens spearheaded our "Dictionary Project," again this year. Her
committee consisted of Leo Phillips, Bob Teninga, Sue Miller, Dave Richards,
Candace Etzler, Janet Powell and "Dictionary Dog," who sleeps in Nancy's
purse, until they enter third grade classrooms. She then awakens him to
greet the children; they love it. Some of the committee read thank you
notes from the children and teachers. They handed out 500 dictionaries this
year. Candace Etzler has accepted to chair this committee next year. This
is a terrific project; I hope we can continue with it.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Rotary District 6930 will host International President Bill
Boyd, on Sunday, February 18, 6:00 p.m., at the Signature Grand Hotel in
Davie. The cost for this is $60.00. This will be the second visit of a
Rotary International president to our district in as many years.
Nancy Owens, working with our RYLA Project, will be accepting applications
from Atlantic High students for this dynamic youth leadership weekend.
The Board of Directors voted to present two new prospective members; they
are Richard Schmitt, sponsored by Ed Voss, and Craig Hammett, sponsored by
Bob Teninga. (First publication.) The board also voted to help sponsor the
Miracle League Team, with a $500.00 donation.
Kurt Godfrey presented a video that touched the hearts of all of us. It
showed our men and women in our armed forces, protecting us from harm's way,
and pictures of our "Fallen Heroes." What more can you say than "God Bless
America; bring our loved ones home safely; soon."
Next week, our speakers will be Jeff and Julia Kadel, with the Miracle
League.
