ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
February 20, 2007
Our Board of Directors met at 7:30 am, led by President David Armstrong, who
has "limped" back from vacation. As always, much was accomplished. This
meeting is open to all members who wish to attend.
President Armstrong led the noon meeting, as well. At this time, we wish to
thank President-elect Kurt Godfrey for his leadership during the absence of
our president; he is getting good practice in for next year.
Jim Pignato gave the invocation; Jimmy Weatherspoon did a good job leading
us acappella during the absence of our maestro, Bruce Williams. Bruce, we
missed you, however.
Harvey Brown, in his usual "quiet manner" welcomed a plethora of guests
(looks like it's cold up north). Mike Campbell, Bill Talen, Nick Loeb and
Mark Denkler (3's) did make ups. We thank each of you for your efforts. We
had Richard Smith and Craig Hammett as guests. Ed Ware presented our banner
to Lyn Hall, of Bakersfield, CA.
Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton gathered in a total of $104.00.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: BINGO - MARCH 22, 2007, 6:00 P.M., ELLIE'S FLAMINGO ROOM.
Please put this on your calendar. We are looking for volunteers to help put
this fundraiser together, as well as raffle prizes. If you have a donation,
please see me. (If you do not volunteer, I will solicit your gifts, or
time.)
Little League opening is March 3, 10:00 a. m. We have sponsored this team
for fifty-five years; please help support them.
Miracle League Opening is April 28, at Miller Field.
PETS Conference is March 9-10; Kurt Godfrey, Leo Phillips and Betsy Owen
will attend.
RYLA will be held in April; we sponsor one student; Nancy Owens is heading
this project.
May 1, the GSE Team from Sweden will be with us. Please support this visit.
Kurt Godfrey introduced our guest speaker, Jeff Kadel, who, by profession,
is a mortgage broker; by passion, he works with the "Miracle League." He
and his family saw the Miracle League Special on HBO; took the initiative
and have made it happen here in Delray Beach. The Miracle League is for the
mentally and physically challenged youngsters, age five to nineteen. "We"
(the citizens of this area, including Rotary Club of Delray Beach) are
building a ballpark for these kids. There are 20,000 disabled youngsters,
from Boca to West Palm Beach. Many of them dream of playing baseball; we
are making it happen! Their field is a specially built field, so walkers,
wheelchairs, etc. can be used. It is made of recycled tires. So far,
through the efforts of the City of Delray Beach, civic organizations, and
individuals, the League now has $500,000.00 toward this project. The
season will open April 28; the special field will be finished next year.
The Rotary Club of Delray Beach gave Mr. Kadel a check for $500.00. We are
now helping sponsor this worthy cause. For more information, contact Julia
