ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

Two new members were inducted into the Rotary Club of Delray Beach, today,
February 27, 2007. Shown are (L. to R.) President David Armstrong; new
member, Richard Schmitt, owner of Pro-Maid; new member, Wayne Brockney,
Retired (Wayne has been a Rotarian 25 years, up north); Kurt Godfrey,
President-elect, and Past President/Assistant District Governor, Leo
Phillips. Kurt was Wayne's sponsor, and Leo sponsored Richard. We welcome
both of you and look forward to working with you in Rotary.
President David Armstrong presided over a packed house. Gerry Meeks gave
the invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon led the singing. (Did I hear him singing
"Down at the Carwash? Congratulations, Jimmy.) Jimmy was so happy to see
Bruce Williams back at the piano today; so were we!
Harvey Brown welcomed about ten visiting Rotarians. Among them was Rev.
Andy Hall, a former member of our club, and former pastor of First Baptist
of Delray Beach. Since his retirement, he is now writing a humor column for
a Fayetteville, Arkansas newspaper. (That Andy sure gets around.) The
members were so happy to see him that he was a "special category" in today's
proceeds, reports Sergeant at Arms, Ernie Simon. Harvey reported that make
ups were done by Lew Currier, Eric Meyer, Paul Barde, and Dave Harden at
Sunrise Rotary. Two graduates of Bruce Wenzel School of Technology made up
online: Tom Stanley (where have I seen that name lately, in blue and white
print?), and Harvey Brown, who spent hours and hours online, making up.
Fred Bonardi gave a stock report....not a very happy one; the market was
down, down, but he had hopes it would be better before day's end.
Sergeant at Arms Ernie Simon collected a total of $115.00 today; very good,
since there were no birthdays to celebrate. Ernie presented our banner to
Dr. Warren Kale of Aiken, SC.
Bob Teninga had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, John Burke.
John is the president of Talent and Energy; is former VP at
Colgate-Palmolive and Reebok. He is on the Board of Directors at The Soup
Kitchen, located at 8645 W. Boynton Beach Blvd, near the turnpike, next door
to the Caridad Center. The Soup Kitchen is a non-profit organization
established in 1984.
Mr. Burke informed us that The Soup Kitchen is funded, solely, by donations
from private funding, and mega large donations from Publix Super Markets.
They furnish all the meat, which is carried to the facility by refrigerated
trucks, donated by United Way. They provide 500 hot meals daily; mostly to
migrant workers and less than 10% homeless people. They send about 350 bags
of food home with these people daily. They start serving at 10:30 to 1:30.
They are in dire need of expanding this facility, to have a much needed
refrigeration room. The county of Palm Beach has approved their plans; a
construction company has donated some building materials. Mr. Burke
estimates they need around $200,000 and lots of expertise to expand the
facility.
Not only do they feed the people, they have an "After School Care Program,"
teaching English, etc. They provide, in addition to the meals, basic
supplies such as baby items, toys, and toiletries, as needed. They are
asking for financial donations, food and baby supplies. They may be reached
at 561-732-7595. For more information: www.thesoupkitchen.org

ANNOUNCEMENT: BINGO FUNDRAISER, March 22, 6:00 p.m. Next week, we will
have a "commitment sheet" at the front table, in foyer. Please sign up to
attend this event. Harvey Brown has graciously consented to be our emcee
again this year. (Mark, we need a caller!) I have already received raffle
prizes from Janet Powell. All members are asked to donate, or solicit
raffle prizes. We always have a fine dinner, and loads of fun. If you
remember, Reeve (Mr. Ann) Bright was our lucky top winner last year. (I
hope I get his cards this year.) Since our friend Lyn Huckle is ill, and
unable to chair this event, I need help from all of you! Help! Help!
