ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

March 6, 2007

President David Armstrong opened the meeting; Dave Richards gave a lovely
invocation. Then, Sam Altdoerffer stepped to the podium and led us in a
couple of our favorite songs, along with accompaniment by Bruce Williams.
Bruce, you receive praise each week (of course, it is always after you have
left!)

Harvey Brown, Bruce Wenzel has taught you well; you do a great job welcoming
our visiting Rotarians, even though you always have one ear listening for
that lonesome train whistle. Harvey welcomed six visiting Rotarians. Sue
Miller presented Gary Feldman, of Burlington, MA with our banner. Nancy
Owens did two make ups. Sam Altdoerffer had his friend, Wendell Stewart,
visiting with us today. We also had two new prospective members today; Dr.
Stefani Martin and Nancy DeAtley. They have been approved, and this is
their first publication for membership.

Sergeant at Arms Candace Etzler proudly announced that she collected
$105.00, with no birthdays, or anniversaries.

President Armstrong inducted into our club today, Craig Hammett, Realtor,
with his sponsor, Bob Teninga, proudly pinning his Rotary pin on him.

Assistant Governor Leo Phillips announced the District Awards, being held on
Thursday May 31, at 6:00 p.m. at the Delray Beach Golf Club. This is always
an enjoyable event, especially since it is being held locally. Leo also
mentioned that the GSE Team would arrive on Tuesday, May 1; Nick Loeb and
Lyn Huckle will be hosting some of the guests.

Our guest speaker was, Bill Adams, retired (a few months ago) Fire Marshall
of Delray Beach Fire Department. We had all thought he would be speaking on
his (over two months) trip to New Zealand, with his wife Charlotte. He's
back "in the groove" however, educating us about Rotary International
Foundation. For our new members, Bill Adams was our Rotary President two
years ago.

Bill made a slide presentation, explaining how Rotary Foundation works, and
where the money we give goes to, internationally. He made some really wild
examples of how people can "waste" their money, or, donate $100.00 yearly to
Rotary International. (This is built into our dues, semi-annually, giving
$50.00) Some of the money is used for funding Group Study Exchange Groups,
from, and to, various parts of our globe. Another program is to sponsor
Ambassadorial Scholarships. We have been fortunate enough to have three
Ambassadorial Scholars, nominated and accepted through our club. Our latest
one is Christina Dombrowski, who will be studying in Argentina. Other
programs are, sponsoring a school in Guatemala, and Peace Scholarships.
These are only a few of the International projects we, as Rotarians help
sponsor. One of our finest examples is the (almost) eradication of Polio,
through Rotary. This project was started over 20 years ago, in 200
countries, with 200 million volunteers (many of them Rotarians), immunizing
over two billion children. 2006 was the lowest ever known cases of Polio,
worldwide.

Our club is embarking on a project to dig water wells in Honduras. One of
our members, Dave Richards has been there, digging wells; he introduced us
to this project. We hope to procure matching funds from our District and
Rotary International.

Bill also touched on TRF (Types of Permanent Funding), of which the funds
are not spent; only the earnings are used for projects. He also quoted that
Rotary is "A Global Network of Community Volunteers." Bill, we thank you
for such an informative explanation of Rotary Foundation.

Our green hat is now up to $229.00 again; with Sam Altdoerffer's winning
ticket missing the Ace of Spades. Sam donated his $5.00 winnings back to
the club.

We are getting good response from our club, regarding our upcoming BINGO
Fundraiser Dinner. This will be on March 22, 2007, Ellie's Flamingo Room.
Cocktails will begin at 6:00 p.m. The price is $50.00; please use the
sign-up sheet, on table in foyer. This is open to the public; bring along
your friends/neighbors; they will have a great evening, with great people
(Us). I will give you the menu next week. We are looking for raffle
prizes; please bring these to the meeting (next week, if possible). We are
looking for gift certificates (restaurants are excellent), merchandise, or
even cash donations. We already have a gift certificate from Dr. Gay Vela,
for three days and two nights stay at Wright By The Sea, and some surprise
gifts from Lyn Huckle. With your help, we can make this the best one, ever!
If you have questions, or a donation, you may call me at 278-0493, 10-5,
Tuesday-Saturday.
