ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
March 13, 2007
ANNOUNCEMENT: Our Bingo Fundraiser will not be held on the original date of
March 22. President Armstrong is working on selecting a later date (TBA).
The Board of Directors voted to change the date, due to many scheduled
conflicts.
The Board of Directors met at Ellie's Flamingo Room at 7:30 a.m. It was
well attended; with one new member, Craig Hammett, in attendance, to
volunteer his services to our club. All club members are invited to attend
these meetings, held the second Tuesday of each month; same time; same
place. Assistant Governors Leo Phillips and Betsy Owen, and President-elect
Kurt Godfrey attended the Rotary PETS Training this past weekend. We thank
you for your dedication to Rotary.
At noon, President Armstrong held the gavel, once more, leading another
meeting, with a "full-house." Hack Allen gave the invocation. Then, Sam
Altdoerffer, with his "rich voice," led our singing, while Bruce Williams
kept us on key. Of course, we had to sing "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling!"
(Some of us only hummed it.)
Inga Talmon got up and took her bows, while we sang, and wished her a "Happy
Birthday."(Seems she's a real pro at that.) She also contributed $40.00 for
her 39th birthday...
Since Harvey Brown was out hopping the freight train, we had no one to
welcome our guests, so, the job was done by President Armstrong. David
Harden did a make up; thanks Dave.
Sergeant at Arms Fred Bonardi gathered in a total of $132.00 today; a much
better report than the stock market report he gave. The market was down,
down, down.
It was announced that Bill Morse has resigned his position as club
treasurer, and member. Tax season sure takes its toll.
Kay Johnson introduced our Teacher of the Month, Paul Mieszczdnski, who in
turn, introduced our Student of the Month, William "Billy" Ehlers. Mr.
Mieszczenski has taught at Atlantic High School for 36 years. He commented
this was the first time he has been chosen Teacher of the Month. He stated
the reason being, he ordinarily does not work with students being chosen as
Student of the Month. He is head of the Construction Academy, building the
"Eagle Nest" (being built by students of Atlantic High School, under his
supervision). This home is located on N.W. 12th Avenue. The CRA furnished
$150,000 to build the structure; the city of Delray Beach owns the house and
property. When completed, it will be sold under the Renaissance Plan. He
also serves as wrestling coach at Atlantic High School.
Student of the Month William "Billy" Ehlers is a polite young man, who
excels academically and working with his hands, as well. He proudly
introduced his parents, who accompanied him; James and Michelle Ehlers, whom
he thanked for their support. He is part of the Eagle Nest Construction
Academy; member of the National Honor Society, and member of the Trinity
Lutheran Church Youth Group. He has received the "Eagles for Excellence"
award. He has worked at 32 East Restaurant for a couple of years, as well
as other restaurants in the area. He plans to attend FAU, to study
Mechanical Engineering; and then own his own company someday. His hobby is
surfing; he sure looks the part.
Jess Sowards had the pleasure of introducing one of our scholarship
recipients, Kelsey McCarran and her mother, Kathy. Kelsey is attending
University of Iowa. She thanked our club for our support.
Bob Teninga has distributed the sign-up sheet for the Delray Affair. If you
have not blocked off your time, please do so; he needs our support. The
dates are April 13, 14, and 15. (We hope to have popcorn as well, this
year.)
On April 28, Rotary University will be held at Indian River College in Ft.
Pierce. This is a training program for upcoming officers. Hopefully, our
nominating committee will have a report for us by next week.
On May 1, our club will be hosting a joint meeting of Area Two (five clubs)
welcoming our GSE Team from Sweden. Also, Lyn Huckle and Nick Loeb will be
hosting some of the GSE Team, in their homes.
On June 7, there will be a Rotary Joint Awards Meeting, consisting of Area
Two, five of the area clubs, to be held at the Delray Beach Golf Club
Restaurant. This begins at 6:00 p.m., with dinner and presentation of
awards to follow.
For those of you that have "forgotten" to pay your dues; they are due now!

It was reported that Con Fecher has been ill, and in the hospital. Con, we
wish you well; we miss you at Rotary. Lyn, we miss you, also.
Our condolences go out to Kurt and Denise Godfrey, in the passing of her
father this week.
