ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

Dear Members and Friends:
I must explain why you received your previous two weeks "Ramblin's" so late,
and in duplication. For the last two weeks, our website, which is
graciously, donated to our club by Jim Blocker, a former member, (and still
a Rotarian at heart,) has had a glitch in it. Neither Jim nor I knew this
was happening. When I received numerous calls from "disgruntled" members
wondering why I had not sent them the Rotary Ramblings, I knew something was
wrong. I called Jim; he "fixed" it immediately. I had already tried to
re-send it, thus the duplication. (This does my heart good; somebody out
there is reading the "Ramblin's!") Jim, we thank you for your efforts.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Our Bingo Fundraiser originally scheduled for this Thursday,
March 22, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 24, 2007. This was the
only option we had. Normally, we hold it on Thursday evening, but the
restaurant (Ellie's Flamingo Room) is now having dinner theatre scheduled on
Thursday evenings. The event will start at 6:00 p.m. for cocktails. There
will be salad served at the table; a buffet served with Prime Rib (with a
carving station); Broiled Salmon; and the usual trimmings. The price will
be $50.00. The ticket will include one drink ticket (then a cash bar), and
dinner. There will be lovely raffle prizes from which to choose. (We will
have members selling raffle tickets.) Many of our members are rallying and
bringing in gifts for the raffle. Since we have a bit more time; how about
helping out? The big item will be a silent auction for a one ounce, gold
coin, generously donated by Lyn Huckle. Today, a suggestion was made, that
all members wear their "Rotary shirts" for this occasion. What's your
opinion?
Our meeting today was presided over by President David Armstrong. Hack
Allen (he's getting in lots of practice lately) gave our invocation. Sam
Altdoerffer bravely led us in a "new" song, winding up singing a solo.
Bruce Williams, as always, livened things up with his wonderful music. We
were told that Betsy Owen is celebrating her birthday, and has sent her
birthday money to RFI. Happy Birthday, Betsy.
Bruce Wenzel was back at the helm today, welcoming a plethora of visitors
from all over our globe. There sure was a flock of snowbirds in attendance.
Craig Hammett gave our banner to Sidel and Allan Morten, of Keighley, UK.
Make ups were done by Tom Stanley, Debra Ferrell, Janet Powell and Eric
Meyer. (Harvey, it's time to catch a southbound train to Delray Beach; we
miss you.)
Fred Bonardi gave a very encouraging stock report at noon. The DOW was up
40 points; NASDAQ was up 14 points, and the S&P was up 7 points. Today, the
price of gold is $660.00.
Fred Bonardi also served as Sergeant at Arms today; collecting $116.00, much
of this money was "accolades" for Bruce Williams. Dave Heffner donated
$10.00 to bid us farewell, until next season.
President Dave Armstrong inducted two new members today. They are Dr.
Stephani Martin, an Optometrist (on E. Atlantic Avenue); sponsored by Ellie
Lowery, and Nancy DeAtley, Vice President, Branch Manager, Sun American
Bank; sponsored by Nancy Owens. We welcome both you women, and look forward
to working on projects with you.
Rev. Roger Richardson has been granted a Leave of Absence. Hurry back,
Roger, Hack Allen needs you on his invocation list.
Area Two of District 6930, Awards Dinner/Presentations will be held on June
7, at the Delray Beach Golf Club Restaurant. This area includes five
surrounding clubs; we will come together for this event. Mark your
calendar; more information to follow.
Kurt Godfrey introduced our guest speaker today; she is Terrill C. Barton,
Assistant City Attorney. She spoke on behalf of American Cancer Society's
"Relay For Life." This event will take place on May 19, beginning at 2:00
p.m. and ending May 20, at 8:00 a.m. The place is Atlantic High School.
She related there will be teams from businesses, clubs, families, friends,
hospitals, faith-based groups, schools and service organizations, all
joining together for one common cause.
One in three Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. The
American Cancer Society Relay for Life gives everyone the opportunity to
fight back and to make a difference in the battle against cancer. It is the
largest source of nonprofit, nongovernmental cancer research funding in the
U.S, investing about $130 million each year.
