ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
April 10, 2007
The day began for many members of Rotary Club of Delray Beach, at a 7:30 a.
m. Board of Directors meeting, in Ellie's Marilyn Room. As most of you
know, all members are invited to attend these monthly meetings (second
Tuesday of each month).
The Nominating Committee has announced our upcoming officers for 2007-2008.
They are as follows:
President Kurt Godfrey
President-Elect Stephen (Steve) Bates
Vice-President Robert (Bob) Teninga
Secretary Tom Stanley
Assistant Secretary Anne Bright
Treasurer Janet Powell
Past President David Armstrong
One new member of Board of Directors: Susan Miller
This is a great group of volunteers, and we are all looking forward to
working with them.
Our noon meeting was presided over by President David Armstrong. Dave
O'Connell gave the invocation. Jim Weatherspoon, back with us today, led
the singing. Bruce Williams, as always, made the room "feel alive" with his
wonderful music.
Harvey Brown, with his infinite charm (inherited from Bruce Wenzel) welcomed
five visiting Rotarians. Sam Altdoerffer had his friend Wendell Stuart
visiting and Dr. Gay Vela had Julie Carlson visiting. We also had Patricia
Egan, Florist, back with us again today. She is a prospective member. Dave
O'Connell presented our banner to visiting Rotarian Joe Lockman, of North
Scranton.
Roy Simon, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $209.00. It was good to
see our own lovely Lyn Huckle back with us, after a long absence, having had
back surgery. Joyce Lunsford paid tribute to her return, by donating
$10.00.
Bob Teninga, the hardest working Rotarian around, gave us an update on the
Delray Affair. It seems he has things "lined up," but can always use more
volunteers at our booth. Please go out and help. Our booth is located near
Veteran's Park, in the same location we have had for years.
The sign up sheet will be in the foyer of our meeting room, for the BINGO
Night, slated for April 24. Harvey Brown has graciously consented to be our
emcee again this year, serving up some fun-filled times, and a big group of
winners of BINGO prize money and raffle winners. Please sign up, as you
enter the foyer; thanks!
We had the pleasure of hearing two of our newest members, Wayne Brockney,
and Craig Hammett tell us a bit about them.
Wayne Brockney has been a Rotarian twenty-five years, serving as president
of Rochester, N. H. Rotary Club, as well as other offices in Rotary. He
attended accounting school in Concord, N. H. He has been married forty
years; a former Marine, and a leader of a "rock 'n roll" band. He spoke
very passionately of his band. He is an avid Red Sox fan. Wayne retired
seven years ago from a firearms business, serving as accounting/finance
director. This company manufactured muzzle loading firearms, with a black
walnut stock, which he once presented one of these fine firearms to
President Ronald Reagan, as well as many of his favorite major leaguers.
After his retirement, he became involved in raising Belgian horses; thus, a
new business was born. He retired again, five years ago, and has bought a
condominium in Delray Beach. He is the proud father of two sons, and two
granddaughters. He plays tennis at least twice daily!
Craig Hammett is a Realtor with ReMax. He was raised in Shreveport,
Louisiana, went to Louisiana State, with a degree in Finance. He moved to
Houston, to become a bank corporate loan officer. In 1989, he went to N.Y.,
to work for Citibank. He then moved to Omaha, Nebraska to serve as CFO of a
Power Plant there. Since he had relatives in Delray Beach, he moved here,
and has been in real estate for six years. Bob Teninga invited him to
attend a Rotary meeting, where he was "motivated by our 4-way test." After
a couple of meetings, he decided he wanted to be a part of it. He has
already volunteered to serve as Publicity Chairperson, in the absence of
Nancy King, until she returns. He has been attending our 7:30 a. m. board
meetings, as well. He is the proud father of a nine-year-old daughter.
We are looking forward to working with, and learning from our newest
members. Next week, we will hear from two more members that are new.
The green hat now holds $362.00, thanks to Steve Rich, missing the Ace.
