ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
April 17, 2007
Our hats are off to Bob Teninga for his great leadership during the Delray
Affair; Steve Bates, you taught him well! Bob, we are very grateful to you,
and your giving spirit. Everyone who worked the Delray Affair (and there
were many of us), had a great time, and we thank each of you for your
efforts. Bob stated we grossed over $5,000.00; net will be around
$3,700.00. It would have been more, if we had not been cheated out of three
hours on Sunday afternoon, when the high winds and rain came along and
closed us down. Dave Richards parked cars to collect money for the club.
Our President David Armstrong led the meeting today. Dave O'Connell gave
our invocation. (He's really getting good at this.) Since Bruce Williams
was away, Sam Altdoerffer tried to keep us on key (I heard him hollowing for
Bruce's help.)
We had three anniversaries: Kurt and Denise Godfrey (he donated $28.00),
Dave and Linda Richards (he donated $34.00), and Bill and Caroline Talen.
Bill explained that he has known Caroline for 62 years; he found her again
25 years ago and married her, after the deaths of their spouses. That is a
love story in itself. He donated $25.00 in honor of their anniversary. We
wish all of you the very best.
Harvey Brown welcomed all our guests. There were more local guests than
snowbirds, proving they have taken flight north. Bill Talen introduced his
bride, Caroline to the club. Other guests were Melody Smith and Trish
Brinkley, Guidance Counselors at Atlantic High School; Don Lerch, Pat Egan,
(prospective new member) and Alan Kustin, Amtrust Bank, Manager (prospective
new member, being posted for first time).
Fred Bonardi was a very happy stockbroker, as he read the market report. It
was up all the way.
As Sergeant at Arms, Fred Bonardi did well again; he collected a total of
$410.00! Dave Richards worked the Delray Affair, parking cars on property
belonging to Anne and Reeve Bright. He collected a total of $100.00, which
he donated to the club. Steve Bates paid for an unclaimed banner.
On Tuesday evening, President Dave Armstrong was to present one of the
scholarships, on behalf of our Rotary Club, to a student attending the
Scholastic Scholarship Awards of Palm Beach County; Founder, Cliff Ripley.
Mr. Ripley founded this twenty years ago. Each year he entertains a large
group of scholastically excellent students with a formal dinner at The
Breakers, of Palm Beach. Then, scholarships are given to the highest
achievers.
President Dave Armstrong stated that all scholarships have been paid to FAU
and no late fees will be incurred. "There was a mix up of misspelled names,
causing checks to be returned."
Leo Phillips reminded us of upcoming important meetings. On May 1, we will
host, along with Green Acres, Lake Worth, Boynton/Lantana and Sunrise Rotary
Clubs, the GSE Team from Sweden. On June 7, there will be a dinner honoring
area Rotarians at the Delray Beach Golf Course, involving the same area
clubs.
Steve Bates presented our "Student of the Month," Carine Caceuis, a senior
at Atlantic High School. She has been involved in Journalism four years,
and involved with the Criminal Justice Administrative Office at the school.
She is fluent, speaking and writing Creole, as her second language. She
plans to pursue a writing career.
Carine introduced her "Teacher of the Month," Karen Gynn. She is a graduate
of Ohio State University. She has taught in Palm Beach County eleven years;
one year at Atlantic. She stated that Atlantic High is the best school in
Palm Beach County, as she has observed it.
Kurt Godfrey had the pleasure of introducing our guest speakers, two of our
newest members.
Paul Barde is from Elizabeth, and Madison, New Jersey, where he went to
Lincoln Tech. He was a Rotarian in New Jersey. He boasted about being on
the "hot dog committee" there. He was also the club's treasurer. He was in
the auto repair business until last year, when he and his family moved to
South Florida. He has three children. He has served as a hockey coach; his
daughter is a star player on her college team. He enjoys Rotary, because he
likes "making a difference," through Rotary.
Debra Ferrell is from Columbus, OH. Her grandparents lived in the Delray
Beach area, so she visited the area many times as a youngster. She and her
husband have been in the airlines business for many years. She stated she
has lived and been in so many places that she has been referred to as the
"bag lady." After 9-11, she and her husband left the airlines, moving to
Delray Beach. He has since rejoined the business. Debra has started her
second career, in the Mortgage Industry. She has worked with seniors on
Reverse Mortgages, until she has now found another passion, "Senior Move
Management." She enjoys being involved in helping others, a great trait of
a true Rotarian.
Next week we will enjoy an excerpt from "Hansel and Gretel," starring
Rachael Pecaro (Sylvia's daughter) and a troupe from her school.
