ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

April 24, 2007

President David Armstrong once again led a great meeting; our attendance is
good. Ernie Simon gave a very sincere, beautiful invocation. Jimmy
Weatherspoon, in his usual jovial manner, led us in singing. As always,
compliments for our "piano man," Bruce Williams, were acknowledged. I must
agree, he sure adds class to our meetings.

Today, Patricia Egan, Joyce Lunsford, Bill Arnst and Jim Pignato are
celebrating birthdays. With that many birthdays, they should all get
together and have a party! Happy, Healthy Birthday to each of you.

Harvey Brown, through thunderous applause, stepped to the podium and
welcomed six visiting Rotarians, from various lands. Tom Stanley, our
"computer geek," did three make-ups online. We also had as our guests, the
cast and crew of "Hansel and Gretel," from St. Joseph's Episcopal School.

Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, who by the way, was congratulated for 20
years service as Sergeant at Arms, of our club, collected a whopping $485.00
today. The big donations were given by the following: Pat Egan donated
$50.00; Bill Arnst donated $72.00; Joyce Lunsford, $83.00; Jim Pignato
donated $81.00, for his birthday, then $58.00 more, because he was unable to
work at the Delray Affair. (Will there be more non-workers come forward
with donations???) We thank each of you for your generosity.

Bob Teninga reported that we netted around $3,600.00 at the Delray Affair.
He sure worked hard to achieve this; again, Bob, thanks are in order.

The Atlantic High School Scholarships will be awarded on (Wednesday) May 15;
it would be great to have a big turnout from our club. We are the second
largest contributor at this event.

Our slate of officers for the upcoming year was brought before the club for
vote; it was unanimously accepted.

They are as follows:

President Kurt Godfrey

President Elect Steve Bates

Vice President Bob Teninga

Secretary Tom Stanley

Asst. Sec. Anne Bright

Treasurer Janet Powell

Board of Directors: Bill Adams, Pat Archer, Bill Arnst, Lyn Huckle, Ellie
Lowery, Susan Miller and Ernie Simon.

Past President: David Armstrong. David Armstrong is our nominee for
delegate to Rotary International Convention.

Head Mistress Kay Johnson, of St. Joseph Episcopal School (and also a member
of our club) was bursting with pride, as six of her students and staff
presented excerpts from Hansel and Gretel, to be presented on May 11
(Friday), 7:00 p.m. at their school. We had Becky Cleveland, Drama Teacher,
and Sandra Scott, pianist, leading Hansel (Dwight Langford) and Gretel
(Rachael Pecaro, Sylvia's daughter) in song. We also had the Gingerbread
Witch (Demery Zlatic), Frack (Elise Therian), Frick (Casey Donelley)
performing for us. These young people are 6th and 7th graders from St.
Joseph's School. They held an outstanding performance; the audience was
thrilled. They put a sticker under a chair to declare a winner of their
"Gingerbread House," full of gingerbread cookies. Sam Altdoerffer won it.
We thank each of you, and we are looking forward to the full performance.

Our Green Hat now holds $418.00, thanks to Alan Kornblau; he did not find
the Ace.

At this time, I want to thank all of those who helped with making our Bingo
Fundraiser a successful, fun-filled time. The biggest thank you goes to
those who came out and supported us. At first, I thought I was going to be
the only one there! We had lovely raffle prizes to offer. Our biggest
moneymaker was Lyn Huckle's generous donation of her gold, one-ounce coin.
The highest bid was Dave O'Connell's son-in-law, Glenn Carrigan, who paid
$550.00 for the coin. Kurt Godfrey "beat the bushes," to procure some of
the big gift certificates. Dr. Gay Vela gave a weekend at her resort,
Wright By The Sea. Harvey Brown, our emcee, kept us all entertained with his
"slap-stick" comedy. Poor Bob Teninga was the brunt of it all, while he
just kept rolling the "Bingo balls." If C. Ron Allen had not been there to
retrieve the elusive balls, they might have all rolled away. Alan Kornblau
was a good "runner," delivering all the goodies to the winners. Bob Teninga
and Susan Miller were invaluable to me, helping to set up the raffle prizes.
They sure made it look appealing. (They also donated lovely prizes) Janet
Powell was our money woman; collecting admissions and counting the proceeds.
Our raffle tickets were sold by Alan Kornblau, Craig Hammett, Patricia Egan
and Susan Miller; all doing a tremendous job. Most of all, I want to thank
Bob Teninga for all the "leg work" he did, and for the cute centerpieces he
made up, with "Bingo Balls" on them. (Will someone teach him how to spell
BINGO?) All of those I forgot to mention, I thank you, also.

Next week is very important to all of us; come early; help work the crowd;
welcome our visitors! We will be hosing the GSE Team from Sweden, along
with members of five other Rotary Clubs in our District. Be there!
