ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
MAY 1, 2007
Today was a very special day for our club; we hosted the GSE Team from
Sweden.
The meeting was presided over by our illustrious president, David Armstrong.
We had the extreme pleasure of having two people lead invocations. First
Jim Pignato was thankful for Rotary and Rotarians. Then, we had our City
Manager, David Harden, read the prayer that was being said in-group, at City
Hall today, to commemorate our city's day of prayer. His prayer was for our
nation.
Jimmy Weatherspoon, in his usual happy manner, led us in a couple of
favorite Rotary songs. (Jimmy, our theme song is: "Smile.") As always,
Bruce Williams "did us proud," with his entertainment before the meeting
started. I think our guests were quite impressed.
Then, Harvey (the comedian) Brown stepped to the podium, welcoming all our
guests, including the area Rotary Club guests, as well as our distinguished
group of GSE of Sweden. Bill Adams introduced a well-known person to our
club, his lovely wife, Charlotte.
Make ups were done by Paul Barde and Dave Harden (the old fashion,
well-accepted way). Nancy DeAtley also did a make up online. We thank each
of you for your efforts.
Patricia Egan, owner of Boynton Beach Florist/Gifts, and Alan Cotzin,
Manager Amtrust Bank, were interviewed, and accepted as members. They will
be installed next week; welcome to both of you. Patricia has already been
working as a member, helping at the Delray Affair, and at the Bingo
Fundraiser.
Fred Bonardi beamed as he gave a good stock report. He also reported, as
Sergeant at Arms, that we had a few AWOL's, including himself, bringing loud
"boo's." Alan Kornblau paid for a picture in the paper (or was it Fred?)
Cliff Ripley donated $15.00, in behalf of the Scholastic Scholarship Fun.
Fred collected a total of $125.00.
President Armstrong announced that our yearly scholarships given to Atlantic
High School students would be on May 16. He has asked for a good attendance
from our club.
Leo Phillips, Assistant Governor, and Betsy Owen, Governor-elect, introduced
the Team Leader, Anders Olsson, of the GSE Team of Sweden, District 2390
(located in the southernmost area of Sweden.) He, in turn, introduced the
other members of the team: Caroline Aspinge, Stina Adielsson, and Ulf
Liljefors. Each member spoke very good English, and told us a bit about
their occupations.
Stina Adielsson, age 31, is a Physiotherapist; studying business. Her
hobbies include boxercise, spinning (aerobics).
Caroline Aspinge, age 32, is a Detective Superintendent, with the local law
enforcement. She enjoys skiing, sailing, hiking and golfing.
Ulf Liljefors, age 36, is a Maintenance Manager, in electrical. He is
married, and the father of two young sons (that he is missing very much).
Mr. Olsson is a Real Estate Developer, and is a Rotarian. He enjoys
golfing, cars and his "Harley."
Each member of the team chose a category, and showed slides of the Swedish
Culture. Their country has produced a number of famous athletes,
entertainers, i.e. ABBA, as well as glass art, fashion, furniture, vodka
(Absolut), and especially the Swedish meatballs, and Smorgasbord. Sweden
excels in industries and technology. Their school and welfare programs are
quite overwhelming. Their tax rate is astronomical, but you sure receive
many amenities from the government, seemingly making it a real "bang for the
buck." They were quite cordial and easy to talk with. Today, we expanded
our philosophy of Rotary!
