ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

May 8, 2007

Our Board of Directors met this morning at 7:30 a.m. at Ellie's Marilyn
Room. We had 19 in attendance; good group. Wayne Brockney attended, to
explain that he has volunteered to help with our bookkeeping, since his
background is in accounting. He will set up the program on the computer,
and assist Janet Powell, Treasurer.

Dave O'Connell and his Scholarship Committee, Sue Miller, Steve Bates, Kurt
Godfrey, Alan Kornblau, and Mark Denkler, have implemented a new and more
simplified program in selecting our scholarship recipients in the future;
this will take place next year, when Susan Miller will be chairperson of
this committee.

At noon, President Dave Armstrong again presided over our meeting. Harvey
Brown gave a lovely invocation. Mr. "Grove Car Wash," Jimmy Weatherspoon,
led us in singing. First, it was the Battle Hymn of Republic, then back to
our theme song, "Smile."

We had birthdays being celebrated by Dave O'Connell, donating $83.00; Dave
Armstrong, donating $60.00; and Ernie Simon, who said he was donating $42.00
and then he would donate $40.00 more at the end of the meeting. (Was this
in case he didn't make it to the end of the meeting?) Sam Altdoerffer and
his bride are celebrating 58 years of marital bliss. We congratulate each
of you and wish you many more.

Harvey Brown stepped to the podium again, welcoming the one visiting
Rotarian, Bob Ridgeway. (We all thought Bob was a member; he should be!)
Eric Meyer, we thank you for your make up the "old fashioned" way. Alan
Kornblau, and Gerry Meeks did make ups on the internet. (Gerry, aren't you
afraid of repercussions from Bruce Wenzel?) Alan Kotzin, still a visitor,
will be inducted as a new member next week, along with Patricia Egan.

Ernie Simon served as Sergeant at Arms, collecting a whopping $500.00. The
Board of Directors voted to send the proceeds of todays "take" to the
tornado victims, along with our prayers, to Greenberg, Kansas. We lacked a
few dollars, then, members started stepping up to the plate, until we
reached the $500.00 goal. Bill Talen gave us a $20.00 farewell. We will
miss your smile this summer, Bill.

Betsy Owen paid for our banner today. She also presented us with a banner,
from Burton-Middlefield, OH. This banner was given to her when she and a
group helped "button-up" the finish on a house being built in LA, by a
Rotary Club from OH, while she was there helping Habitat for Humanity build
another house.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Awards Night, June 7. Delray Beach Golf Course Restaurant.
6:00 p.m., Reception; Dinner, 7:00 p.m. This evening will be a combined
evening for Area 2, Clubs of District 6930. Our District Governor, Larry
Labadie will attend, as well. This is a night to honor members of our club,
as well as others in District 6930.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: May 15, will be the night to award scholarships to our
Atlantic High School recipients. President Armstrong has asked for good
attendance.

June 29, is slated to be our installation of new officers and board, for
2007-2008.

Kurt Godfrey reported that the Miracle League (for mentally and physically
challenged young children) opened their season this past week. Their games
will be played weekly, on Saturday afternoon, at 4:30 p.m; Bucky Dent
Baseball School (adjoins Miller Park; south end). We help sponsor the
"Delray Devil Rays." Kurt has offered directions, if you call 441-8837. He
says, "A miracle happens every week!"

Again, I want to thank all the donors/helpers, who helped contribute to the
success of our recent Bingo Night Fundraiser. A special thank you goes out
to Lyn Huckle, who donated her gold coin, weighing one ounce, as the biggest
prize of the evening. The coin brought $550.00. An unofficial total of net
proceeds are $1,751.60. We will furnish an official count, per Janet
Powell, Treasurer.

Our guest speakers today were Alan Kornblau and Kay Johnson.

Alan Kornblau is the Director of Delray Beach Library. His first job was
selling programs for "Miss America" contest. He went to school, and learned
how to work the Crap tables in the casinos in Atlantic City. (We may need
him to hold a fundraiser for us, huh?) After choosing a career in teaching,
a teacher advised him to learn to be a librarian; look where he is today!
His last comment was, "Now, I'm in Rotary, my life is complete."

Our second speaker was Kay Johnson. Kay is a native Floridian, a rare
breed. She is in her second year as Head of St. Joseph's School. The
school will be celebrating fifty years this fall. She is very proud of this
prestigious school, and spoke of it, rather than herself, indicating this is
her life. As you know, we had students from their upcoming play, "Hansel
and Gretel," performing for us last week. This will be performed this
Friday, May 11, 7:00 p.m. at the school. Kay proudly boasted of their
Tennis Program, Drama, and other accolades.

We are proud to have both these people as members of our club, and look
forward to working with them.
