ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
June 26, 2007
Today was our annual Installation of Officers. Emcee Jim Pignato opened the
meeting. Hack Allen gave the invocation. Bruce Williams entertained us on
piano, while we had lunch.
Ernie Simon swore in new officers for 2007-2008. He began with the Board of
Directors. They are Bill Adams, Bill Arnst, Susan Miller, Lyn Huckle, Ellie
Lowery, Ernie Simon and Pat Archer.
Ernie then swore in officers Jan Armstrong, Treasurer; Bob Teninga,
Vice-President; Tom Stanley, Secretary.
Ernie Simon then swore in new President, Kurt Godfrey. President Godfrey
presented David Armstrong with the "Past President of Rotary Club of Delray
Beach" honor plaque. David then passed the gavel of presidency to President
Godfrey.
Past President Armstrong gave his farewell speech, citing all the wonderful
accomplishments of our club this year. Among them were an unprecedented
thirteen new members, a gain of 18%. Our finances increased phenomenally.
He thanked the officers and board of directors who served under his
leadership.
David Armstrong presented certificates to the following: Lyn Huckle,
Distinguished Service Award "Come Back Player; Distinguished Award for their
Accounting System, to Jan Powell and Wayne Brockney; Dave O'Connell for
Membership/Scholarship leadership; Nancy Owens, for her Dictionary Project,
SAS Committee. He presented Sally Dye with a lovely bouquet for her
secretarial work. He also acknowledged the past presidents of our club;
eight were present. (Jim Pignato has served twice.)
The following received plaques: Ernie Simon received the Lifetime
Achievement Award. He has had perfect attendance for 40 years. He was
president 1976-1977, a Paul Harris Fellow, chaired the SAS Awards, and has
served on Board of Directors many years, as he is currently doing.
Bob Teninga was presented the Rotarian of the Year Award for his efforts,
especially since he is a "new" Rotarian. He worked on the CCCC Fundraiser,
headed up the Delray Affair Booth, helped set up the Bingo Fundraiser. He
is eager to help out, and never says "no!"
The Outstanding Service Award Plaque was presented to Ellie Lowery, who is a
Paul Harris Fellow, writes the newsletter, works on fundraisers, and is on
the board of directors.
Others he thanked were Leo Phillips who "set the standard" for him to
follow. Bill Arnst was thanked for his Board of Directors role, the Wreath
Sales and Green Hat sales. He also sets up our banners weekly. He thanked
Fred Bonardi for his long tenure as Sergeant at Arms, Hack Allen for
Chairing the Invocation Committee and Sylvia Pecaro for preparing our tax
returns.
When newly elected President Kurt Godfrey came to the podium, he thanked
Mark Denkler for introducing him to Rotary. One of his goals is to increase
our membership to 100 this year. At this time, we are 73 strong.
Among our guests were President Godfrey's lovely wife Denise and daughter
Tara. David Armstrong had Linda Greene as his guest. Also, as our guest,
we had Tatiana Olsak, one of our scholarship recipients. She was there to
thank our club for her scholarship.
We thank Past President David Armstrong for a great year under his
leadership. We are looking forward to another great year under the
leadership of President Kurt Godfrey.
