ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
July 10, 2007
President Kurt Godfrey presided over his first board of directors meeting at
7:30 a.m. today. He "learned well," under the leadership of Past President
David Armstrong (a direct quote from Dave). He presented a proposed budget,
as well as a calendar of events for the upcoming year. We will continue the
Service Above Self Award for a period of 4-6 years. The new committee will
consist of Bill Adams, Leo Phillips, Nancy Owens, and Kurt Godfrey .
Retiring from this committee are Ernie Simon and Jim Pignato. Under the new
guidelines, a fellow Rotarian may be nominated. Please be ready to nominate
someone for this prestigious award.
At noon, President Godfrey continued his leadership. Harvey Brown gave a
lovely invocation. Jim Pignato, along with Bruce Williams' accompaniment,
led the singing. Jim then announced the "reimplementation" of the Sunshine
Committee. He is asking that all members keep him apprised of any thing
going on in our membership that he should report to the club, such as
illness/death of members or their family. (It can be very lonely when it
seems no one cares.) Jim Pignato may be reached at jvp@pucpa.com. His
phone numbers are (w) 276-3821, and (h) 736-2537. Jim, we thank you for
assuming this role.
Harvey Brown, returning to the podium, welcomed Frieda Myerson, of Yorktown
Heights, NY. Lew Currier presented our banner to her. Dr. Warren Cole, of
Aiken, S. C. presented us with a banner from his club. Make ups were done
the "old fashioned, mingling with Rotarians" way, by Paul Barde and Lew
Currier. It seems the Wenzel Technology Team consisted of Alan Kotzin, Alan
Kornblau, Candace Etzler and Sylvia Pecaro (4's) doing their make ups
online. Seriously, we thank each of you for your efforts. As you know,
this helps keep our club among the top.
Georgina Rice, who thought she was retired, (mumbled something about "this
should have been Fred reporting, since it's down") gave the stock report
after consulting with her former cohort. The DOW was down 54 points and the
NASDAQ was down 13 points.
Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton collected a total of $90.00 today. The
special category was "proud to be a member of Rotary Club of Delray Beach."
Asst. Governor Leo Phillips announced the Scholastic Achievement Foundation
Golf Tournament, slated for October 13, at Quail Ridge. More on this later.
He also announced the GSE Team would be going to the Ukraine this year. If
you know of anyone that would qualify for this, please let Leo know.
President Godfrey gave out more perfect attendance pins today. Past
President David Armstrong received for two years; Lyn Huckle for five years;
Bill Arnst has thirty-one perfect attendance years. Congratulations to all.
I would like to mention Bill's dedication to our club. Not only does he
sell "green hat" tickets weekly, he serves on our board of directors; heads
up our holiday wreath sales, and the most thankless job of preparing for the
meeting each week, by carrying in our large Rotary banners, and now our new
banner display; then stores them after the meeting.
President-elect Steve Bates introduced our guest speaker Philip Levenstein,
of Palm Beach County Health Department. He is Government Operations
Consultant II, Public Health Preparedness. Mr. Levenstein spoke on
Volunteer Training, for Cities Readiness Initiative (CRI), of the Strategic
National Stockpile (SNS). He got our attention when he stated, "the
unthinkable has already happened in the United States" (The Anthrax cases).
A plan has been put together "just in case" of biological emergency. In
January 2006, Palm Beach County was designated as a CRI (Cities Ready
Initiative). We must be able to provide preventative medication to our
entire population, about 1.3 million people in 48 hours. We will need 45
Points of Dispensing with 5400 volunteers. Each POD will have to dispense
meds at the rate of 625 people per hour. Mr. Levenstein elaborated on the
plan, which is very detailed. Today, he is looking for volunteers to be
trained for such emergencies. He may be reached at e-mail:
Philip_levenstein@doh.state.fl.us, or 561-355-3150.
The green hat now holds $683.00. Lyn Huckle missed the Ace again.
Betsy Owen has submitted Vison Chongsuksuri's name for membership.
Next week's speaker TBA.
