ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
July 17, 2007
President Kurt Godfrey opened the meeting; Steve Bates gave the invocation.
Then, Jimmy Weatherspoon stepped to the podium to lead the singing. Whoops,
he chose a song he did not know, so, we sent him home with a songbook to
rehearse the song. (Jimmy, you are a brave soul.) Bruce Williams "bailed
him out" with his piano. We had a visitor who said she had so much fun that
she is coming back for more!
Harvey Brown made his way to the podium to welcome our visiting Rotarian,
Frieda, of Yorktown Heights, NY. Eric Meyer did a make up at Sunrise Rotary.
Doing make ups online were Fred Bonardi, Alan Kornblau and last, but not
least, Gerry Meeks. (Harvey was glad Bruce Wenzel was not in attendance to
witness the last one.) Our guest speaker had three of her family members in
attendance. Deb Ferrell had Elaine Kenney as her guest. It was good to see
our perky blonde, Shirley Clark, back with us today.
Fred Bonardi was mighty happy as he gave the stock report, since the market
had gone up to 14,000 when he spoke. The Feds are keeping the interest rate
unchanged. As Sergeant at Arms, Fred collected a total of $92.00. Sue
Miller and Steve Bates gave money in honor of our "Piano Man."
Mike Campbell, on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, reminded of us of their
big fundraiser at Delray Golf Course this Saturday, July 21st 7:00 to 5:00
p.m. He is looking for volunteers, as well as sponsors for each hole. Keep
in mind, it is FREE! His number is 561-819-6070.
President Godfrey finally had Gerry Meeks in attendance so he could present
him with a pin for nineteen years perfect attendance. (Gerry always does
make ups; now online.)
Assistant Governor Betsy Owen reminded us of the upcoming RI Presidential
Conference, with the focus on membership, slated for August 24-25. It will
be held at the Westin Hotel, Ft. Lauderdale. $115.00 will cover the cost of
reservations, dinner on Friday night, lunch on Saturday, including all
workshops. On Friday evening, our keynote speaker will be RI President
Wilfrid "Wilf" Wilkinson. All officers are urged to attend. For more
information, go to our website: www.delraybeachrotary.org, then click on
District 6930.
President-elect Steve Bates introduced our speaker for today. She was
Helen Paul, a Rotarian of Park Ridge Rotary Club, District 7490, NJ. She
has been a Rotarian less than three years. She has traveled to many places.
This past April, she took her third trip to Rundu, Namibia. This is a
remote northern area of the country, on the SW coast of Africa, near Angola.
Mrs. Paul spoke to us about the need for our support in supplying water to
two dormitories and a kitchen of an orphanage, which is being built in
Rundu. Her club will be working in conjunction with the Rundu Rotary Club.
This orphanage will house at least 145 children, plus the "after school
group" of almost as many. She related bleak stories of these orphanage
children. Her club is applying to RI for funding, but is looking for other
clubs to help in this well project, costing $13,000.00.
President Godfrey asked that you mark the date of December 6, on your
calendar now, for our Holiday Get-Together. It is to be held at Delray Golf
Club Restaurant. If you have entertainment requests, please let him know.
Area Rotary Clubs have been invited to attend.
Next week we will have as our guest speaker Dr. Joy Deri Ronis, our
Ambassadorial Scholarship Teacher.
Green Hat now holds over $718.00, since Bob Teninga missed the Ace!
