ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

July 24, 2007

Here comes the Ramblings! I promised you at noontime we would be up and
running. Many thanks to Jim Blocker, "the keeper" of our old/new website.
He is a former member, who has gotten too busy to be with us at this time.
He still donates this website for our club.

President Godfrey opened the meeting, and then called Dave O'Connell to the
podium for the invocation. Our real trooper, Jimmy Weatherspoon, led the
chorus acappella. Bruce Williams is away on a well-deserved vacation, but
we missed his beautiful music.

Harvey Brown in his usual shy, reserved state stepped to the podium and
welcomed our visiting Rotarians. He then welcomed back Mark Denkler and Ray
Ripley, who by the way, dropped in the kitty $20.00 he was so happy to be
back. We also had visiting with us Atty. Herman Stevens, a guest of Kurt
Godfrey, and Tom Newberry, of Children, Hope and Horses, a guest of Deb
Ferrell. Mark Denkler is keeping up his twelve years of perfect attendance
by doing make ups while in Georgia, multiple times. Sue Miller had two make
ups; Jess Sowards had two make ups; Patricia Egan did make ups in Dublin,
Ireland (leaving Harv quite confused).

Fred Bonardi gave us the stock report, indicating the market is in a
"see-saw" mode. At his presentation, the Dow was down 70 points, but YTD up
12%.

Sergeant at Arms Candace Etzler collected a total of $104.00 today. Jess
Sowards paid for a banner. Nancy Owens paid for her picture, published in
the newspaper.

Jim Pignato gave us a message from "Uncle Luigi," then told the audience of
the passing of Leo Phillips' mother. He is our Sunshine Chairperson; please
report to Jim any thing pertaining to our club members and family. Leo, our
club passes to you our deepest sympathy.

President Godfrey noted that on August 1, our lunch would increase to
$13.00. There has not been an increase in a number of years; the diner
keeps the price very moderate for us. On August 7, our new District
Governor will be with us. On December 6, we will hold our Holiday Party, in
conjunction with the Delray Beach Sunrise Rotary and Boynton-Lantana Rotary
Club. More later.

President Godfrey presented Mark Denkler his twelve-year perfect attendance
pin, and a thank you plaque for introducing him to Rotary. Mark, it is good
to see your smiling face back among us.

Today, we had a nice surprise. We had the pleasure of viewing another of
Nick Loeb's productions, called "The Living Century." Today, the segment
was about Ben Levinson, who was born in 1895. He referred to himself as a
"recycled teenager." He recently passed away, but he was one of two oldest
drivers in CA. (I bet he would have competition in FL.) He was interviewed
on the Jay Leno Show; they showed him breaking his own shot put record.
When I am that age, I will demand equal time on Jay Leno Show; will you
watch me? (Nick is away on his honeymoon, but we thank him for these
interesting productions.)

The Green Hat was at $753.00 today, and climbing, thanks to Bruce Wenzel
missing the Ace!

Next week we will hear our own member, David Harden, City Manager. Please
try to attend to find out more about our great City!
