president presents $45,000 for new homes along Katrina-ravaged Gulf Coast 


To support the rebuilding of homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, Rotary
International President Wilfrid J. Wilkinson presented a US$45,000 check to
Pete Owsianowski president of the Rotary Club of South Bend, Indiana, USA,
and former University of Notre Dame basketball coach Digger Phelps on 27
July.

Rotarians in District 3270, which includes Pakistan and Afghanistan, are
seeking additional aid for victims of a 26 June cyclone that killed 324
people, left 224 missing, and more than 377,000 homeless in the Balochistan
and Sindh provinces of Pakistan.

With Rotary's demographics changing and membership decreasing in North
America, Rotarians must "change the way we think about membership," RI
President Wilfrid J. Wilkinson told attendees at a presidential membership
conference held 20-21 July in Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

New recognition

Small Rotary clubs now have a new program to help them increase membership.
The Recognition of Smaller Club Membership Growth, a certificate program
recently adopted by the RI Board, is designed to stimulate growth in the 25
percent of clubs that have fewer than 20 members.
