ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
August 7, 2007
Your Board of Directors met at 11:00 a. m. today with our new District
Governor, Phil Lustig. His main objective was to become acquainted with our
club. He was interested in finding out what projects, local and
international, that our club is involved in. As President Kurt Godfrey
began to run down the list of one dozen, or so, local projects we are
involved in, he became very impressed. When he spoke at our noon luncheon,
he referred to the fact that we are the longest standing Little League
sponsor, which is now 56 years. Ernie Simon told him about our Service
Above Self Award; Dave Armstrong told him about our involvement of the
planned International Project, Water for Honduras.
At noon, President Godfrey opened the meeting, after we were entertained by
the beautiful music of Bruce Williams. (Many of you are unaware that Bruce
gave us "Christmas in July" last week, with his music.) Mike Campbell gave
a beautiful invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon then stepped to the podium to
lead the singing. We then sang Happy Anniversary to Hack (and Gloria)
Allen. They have been married sixty years! He donated $60.00 in honor of
this. (He's still fooling her, after all these years.) Congratulations to
both of you.
Harvey Brown greeted quite an array of visitors today. Among them, he
greeted, at the head table, District Governor Phil Lustig, Boca Sunset Club;
Governor- Elect Betsy Owen (our club); Asst. District Governor Leo Phillips
(our club); in the audience, Ed Rowan, DG Nominee, of the Boca Sunrise Club.
Harvey also announced the Shuttle Launch will be tomorrow, (Wednesday, Aug.
8) at 6:36 p. m. He also discredited some of the negative hype given by the
news media, regarding the astronauts.
We certainly thank the following who did make ups: Paul Barde did two make
ups at Delray Rotary Sunrise; Allen Kotzin, Tom Stanley, Sylvia Pecaro and
Harvey Brown, using the internet for make ups. Sylvia Pecaro had a visitor
today, Shirley Fitzgerald, of Houston, TX. Guess whose sister she is..Fred
Bonardi's!
Fred Bonardi, wearing two hats again, first gave us a very positive stock
market report. Fred then, wearing his Sergeant at Arms hat, gave us a good
report there, collecting a total of $153.00, including Hack Allen's $60.00
contribution. Sue Miller and David Armstrong had pictures in the newspaper
with our scholarship recipients, thanks to our acting Publicity Chairperson,
Craig Hammett.
Assistant Governor Leo Phillips introduced our District Governor Phil Lustig
to our club. He stated that Phil grew up in Long Island. He moved to
Florida in 1981. He has been a Rotarian since 1978, belonging to various
Rotary Clubs throughout the area. He is now a member of Rotary Club of Boca
Sunset, since 2000. He has served as president twice. He is an avid
swimmer, coaching swim teams. He serves on his church council.
After saluting our club for its various local involvements, Governor Lustig
explained that his job is to support the activities of our club. He also
read the function of what "District" means. He also told us that membership
is a huge issue this year. In the twenty years that women have been in
Rotary, it has grown 30%. He also told us there is a club in Merritt Island
with no women members. (We are loading a bus of women members to go there
and recruit!)
He pointed out how crucial it is to keep members involved, especially new
ones, finding out what excites them. His personal philosophy is "to have
fun."
President Godfrey inducted our newest member, Vison Chonsuksuri, sponsored
by Betsy Owen. He is the owner of A-1 Thai Restaurant, and Gold Bell
Furniture, S. Federal Highway. Vison is a native of Thailand; welcome to
our club.
Jim Pignato missed the Ace today, bringing the Green Hat winnings over
$759.00 at this point.
Dr. Stephanie Martin was our Greeter today, welcoming everyone with her big
smile. She also announced that she is offering a $10.00 eye exam to all
schoolchildren. She had the flyers on the tables, at noon. If you know of
a child that needs a "back to school" eye exam, please tell them about this
special offer. She will also be our guest speaker next week.
We have a report that Lyn Huckle is "under the weather" again. Lyn we miss
you!
REMINDER: Presidential Membership Seminar, August 24-25, Ft. Lauderdale.
