ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
August 14, 2007
President Kurt Godfrey presided over a Board of Directors meeting at 7:30 a.
m. today. He moved through the agenda with ease, reminding us of important
upcoming dates of events. All members are invited to attend any of these
board meetings, held the second Tuesday of each month, at Ellie's, Marilyn
Room, 7:30 a. m.
At noon, President Godfrey again was at the helm, leading yet another great
Rotary meeting.
REMINDER: Dues are due! If you have not paid your dues, please arrange to
do so ASAP. Also, if you have make ups and excused absences, please get
these to Sally Dye.
UPCOMING EVENTS: Ft. Lauderdale Rotary Presidential Membership Seminar,
August 24-25.
November 27, 2007, Service Above Self Award, to be held at Old School
Square.
April 15- May 8, 2008, GSE Team from Ukraine. If you know of someone that
would be a good candidate for our team to the Ukraine, please let President
Godfrey know. (Our team will be picked, starting Sept. 15.)
December 6, 6:30-10:30, Holiday Party at Delray Beach Golf Club Restaurant.
(This is in conjunction with the Rotary Sunrise and Boynton-Lantana Clubs.)
Joyce Lunsford gave our invocation today, doing a good job. (Hack Allen is
still looking for members to add to the invocation roster.)
Jim Pignato, after giving us the latest update on "Uncle Luigi," led us in
song. Bruce Williams, who always escapes before hearing all his accolades,
accompanied him on piano.
We sang Happy Birthday to Nick Loeb. Nick gave us $32.00 in celebration of
his 32nd birthday. He was beaming; he looked like the "Cheshire Cat." He
just returned from his Honeymoon; he finally talked Anna into marrying him!
Congratulations to you both.
We also sang Happy Birthday to Dr. Januariusz "Jan" Styperek, who generously
donated $2.00 for each year, totaling $100.00. Thank you for your
generosity.
Harvey Brown stepped to the podium, amid his thunderous applause, and
commented on the space launch being on time, without a hitch. Then he
welcomed Steve Bates' guests James Batson, owner of Merritt Transfer and Tom
Hayden, of Sun American Bank. Patricia Egan's guest was Dee Butikis. He
then thanked Mike Campbell, Patricia Egan, Eric Meyer and Alan Kornblau for
doing make ups. This is so important to our club; we thank each of you.
Assistant Governor Leo Phillips had the pleasure of introducing our
Ambassadorial Scholar, Christina Dombrowski. She graduated from UF, in May,
with a degree in International Business. She is a straight A student, as
well as being a cheerleader (many more achievements to her credit). She
will be leaving for Buenos Aires, to study with her Rotary Ambassadorial
Scholarship from March 7, through December 10, 2008. We wish her much
success.
Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton, collected a total of $213.00 on a hot day in
Delray. This total included the "birthday guys." Betsy Owen paid for a
banner she did not give away.
President-elect Steve Bates had the pleasure of introducing our guest
speaker, our own member Dr. Stephani Martin, Board Certified Optometrist.
She is married to Jeremy; they have a Boxer named "Champ." She joined
Rotary six months ago. I had the pleasure of being her sponsor. Her
practice has been open one year. Not only is she an Optometrist, she is a
Miami Dolphins Cheerleader! She attended the University of Iowa, majoring
in Psychology. She studied her present occupation at Nova University, Ft.
Lauderdale. She fell in love with Delray Beach when she was doing her
internship with Dr. Carter, here.
She has a passion for helping others. She has a current program, for the
month of August, doing eye exams for schoolchildren for a mere $10.00. She
is excited about collecting eyeglasses to give to the local Lion's Club.
They are then distributed to needy people in developing countries. She
stated that 153 million people need eye care. She works with "The
Lighthouse," in Broward (for vision impaired), as well as the "Jefferson
Program" in Palm Beach County.
Dr. Stephani Martin's practice is "OceanOptics," located at 1155 E. Atlantic
Avenue, Suite 104. For more information on this project:
ocean_optics at yahoo.com. or, 561-265-2020. We thank her for the little
goodies she placed on each table (eyeglass cleaner). Three cheers for the
eye doctor! Don't forget to bring in your old eyeglasses for this project.
Green hat is now worth about $902.50.
