ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
August 21, 2007
Today was another wonderful, hurricane free day in Delray Beach. President
Kurt Godfrey presided over our meeting. Bob Teninga gave a wonderful, from
the heart, invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon was back with us, leading us in
song. Bruce Williams did not get away before President Godfrey gave him
accolades. (He always has another gig following his entertaining our club.)
President Godfrey and Eric Meyer celebrated birthdays. President Godfrey
donated $56.00, and Eric Meyer donated $89.00. (Are they both that old?
Naw!) We thank you for your generosity, and wish you many more happy years.
Bruce Wenzel stepped to the podium and welcomed our guests. (I assume
Harvey Brown was chasing the space shuttle landing, or even a train.) Bruce
welcomed Judy Elliott, a Rotarian, and a professor at University of
Missouri. He also introduced his lovely granddaughter Kaeli Stenroos, who
was celebrating her last day of freedom before going back to school. She
is now a fourth grader.
Make ups were done by Mark Denkler (3xs) in GA; Paul Baude did a make up at
Sunrise Rotary of Delray Beach. Fred Bonardi and Deb Ferrell did online
make ups. We thank each of you for your efforts.
Fred Bonardi gave an encouraging stock report; year to date, the Dow is up 5
½, the NASDAQ up 4 ½ and the S&P up 2 ½. The Feds have cut rates again; he
was very optimistic, after last weeks slump.
Fred then gave the Sergeant at Arms Report. After the donations of Kurt,
$56.00 and Eric, $89.00, he collected a total of $198.00; not a bad total
for mid-summer. There were two AWOLs (we wont mention their names) that
really were Booed.
President Godfrey reminded us of the upcoming Membership Conference, this
weekend.
On November 27, we will hold our SAS Awards; please be at OSS.
December 6, will be our Holiday Party, in conjunction with Sunrise and
Boynton-Lantana Clubs. Please put these dates on your calendar.
Dues are PAST DUE. Please pay promptly!
President Godfrey handed out information on the Rotary Club credit card,
issued by Bank of America. This MasterCard brings a percentage of your
purchases back to Rotary. Thus far, five million has been donated to
Rotary. The card has the Rotary wheel on it, thus creating conversation
about Rotary at the checkout counter.
Mike Campbell had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker Matt
Carbone, Center Supervisor at the 505 Teen Center and Skate Park, 505 SE
Fifth Avenue, Delray Beach. (This is the location of the Womens Club.)
Matt introduced one of his star attendees at the center, Diego Milfort. He
is proud of Diego, who is very interested in music. Since Matt has interest
in music also, he has been able to help kids like Diego, fulfill their
dreams at the center. Diego lives with his grandparents here in Delray
Beach, and has aspirations of going to college in the near future. He
graduated from Atlantic High this year.
The center opened in 2000. Its doors are open daily, and about 40 to 60
kids come there daily. In summer, they are open 12:30 to 9:00 p.m. The
center offers Ping-Pong, Air Hockey, Computers, Recording Studio,
Basketball, Billiards, PlayStation ll, Board Games, Table Tennis, and their
awesome Skate Board Park. They hold Teen Talk sessions, dealing with
todays problems for teenagers.
Lula Butler, Community Improvement Director for the City of Delray Beach
(and a member of our Rotary Club) is head of the Delray Beach Youth Council
who organizes activities at the Center.
The mission statement of the 505 Teen Center is to make a difference in the
life of each child and the youth of today by offering educational and
recreational opportunities designed to promote self-esteem, respect for
others, social responsibility and develop leadership skills in a supervised,
safe, and secure facility.
Matt, we wish you the best with our Delray Beach kids. He stated every day
is a Category 5, at the Teen Center.
Alan Cotzin, one of our newest members announced that he is being
transferred to another branch of AmTrust Bank, with a promotion, and must
leave us. Alan, it has been a pleasure having you as a member; we wish you
success. Please visit us often.
It was good to see Lyn Huckle back with us, looking spry as always.
The Green Hat now has $921.00 in it!
