Rotary Ramblings - May 22, 2007
Called to order by President Kurt after a particularly delightful array of
piano pieces performed by our own Bruce Williams.
Invocation was given by Jim Pignato.
Steve Rich led us in a songs "America the Beautiful" and "Smile".
Dave Richards celebrated his birthday with a rousing round of "Happy
Birthday to You" and a generous contribution for his birthday ($55).
Our resident comedian Harvey Brown acknowledge our one guest and our 3
rotarians who made up the traditional way (Bill Arnst on a cruise) and
online (Alan Kornblau and Tom Stanley)
Sargeant-at-arms Candance Etzler collected a wopping $120 - most of which
(duh!) came from Dave Richards birthday contribution.
Kurt Godfrey, Steve Bates, Betsy Owens and Sue Miller all participated in
the President's Membership Conference this weekend in Ft. Lauderdale. Sue
gave a brief report indicating it was very informative with various
suggestions on gaining and retaining members - the focus of this year's
President of Rotary International, Wilfred Wilkinson, is Membership -
Increasing and Retaining Existing Members.
President Godfrey made several announcements:
September 8th - IRCC - he'll advise who he thinks should attend
November 27th - Service Above Self Award
December 6th - Holiday Party
Betsy Owens made an announcement indicating we have been certified for youth
exchange. Two host families will be needed for each school, as they do not
want students to stay at one house for the entire year. Please let her know
if you are interested in hosting one of these young people - it is a great
experience!
Leigh Lamson, Health Service Coorindator of Life Line Screening, was our
speaker. He shared some valuable information about the health related risk
factors for stroke, aneurisms, vascular disease and osteoporosis.
Screenings saved his life and education about such screenings is crucial.
The screening indicates the risk factors for these types of diseases and he
explained the testing and can actually prevent these diseases by providing
early detection. He also raffled away a free testing - Pat Archer won.
Remember - if you think someone is having a stroke, think of the acronym -
FAST - Face (is it even on both sides or drooping on one); Arms (can they
lift them above their heads evenly); Speech (is it slurred); Time (is of the
essence - call 911.
$904 in the green hat - Candace Etzler won - but did not pull the ace - hey
folks, we're running out of cards - need a winner soon.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Miller
