ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

SEPTEMBER 11, 2007

I will begin by thanking Sue Miller for writing the newsletter for the last
two weeks, in my absence. Now that I am back...I'm ready to "Ramble on!"

Our Tuesday started with a Board of Directors meeting in the Marilyn Room,
Ellie's Diner, led by President Kurt Godfrey. It was well attended by
officers and board members. All members are invited to attend these
meetings, second Tuesday of each month, at 7:30 a. m. Learn what your
Rotary Club is all about. The Board voted to present a check to Miracle
League, for $500.00. The Miracle League season will open in October; time
will be posted in the next newsletter.

President-elect Steve Bates has asked that all members volunteer for at
least three committees. He passed out a form with each of these categories
listed. If you have not signed up yet, please help Steve; return your form
next week. The Board decided to have a "billboard" in the front entrance
each week, with the latest "happenings" posted on it. Please take time to
review this as you enter, weekly.

At the noon meeting, President Kurt Godfrey was again "at the reigns,"
presenting another quality performance. Dave Richards gave the invocation.
Jimmy Weatherspoon, accompanied by Bruce Williams, led us in patriotic
songs, appropriate for the day (9-11).

Candace Etzler, we wish you a Happy, Happy Birthday. We also thank you for
your generous contribution of $39.00.

Harvey Brown, the "star pupil" of Bruce Wenzel, welcomed all our guests;
even my guest who is a TN Vols Fan! Vison introduced his guest, John
O"Connell, a prospective member. Pat Egan introduced her visitor, Alex
Fonzo (?). Make ups were done by Harvey Brown, Ellie Lowery, Pat Egan, Pat
Archer,

Dave Harden, Sylvia Pecaro and Alan Kornblau. I would like to mention that
Wayne Brockney, who is away for the summer, has been sending his information
on his make ups, all summer, helping to keep our attendance percentage among
the top in the District.

Sergeant at Arms, Tony Allerton collected a total of $125.00 today.

Nancy Owens informed the members of the Service Above Self Award, stating
this year, for the first time, we may nominate a fellow Rotarian. The forms
for voting for a Service Above Self Award recipient were also handed out.
Please give this some thought and turn in your choice for this prestigious
award by next Tuesday. "The purpose of this award is to recognize and honor
individuals who have given to our community something special of
themselves.individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of
our community and who have contributed substantially to the enhancement of
our quality of life by efforts unrelated to their employment or political
offices."

This past weekend, officers of our club attended a membership seminar. They
were Steve Bates, Bill Adams, Kurt Godfrey, Bob Teninga and Governor-elect
Betsy Owen. They are truly dedicated Rotarians.

Steve Bates had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, one of the
best-known personalities in our community, our own "Culture King of Delray,"
Joe Gillie, Director of Old School Square, for the past fourteen years.
Even though he does such an outstanding job, he always gives the credit to
his wonderful staff.

Joe, a native of Danville, Virginia, worked, acted, and danced his way
through college. He is a graduate of Averett University; then acquired an
M. A. in Theater from Portland State University.

Joe created and staged presentations that won the city of Delray Beach the
All-America City Award twice. He is very excited about the "smart growth"
of Delray Beach. He referred to the parking garage, and to making it a work
of art. It is scheduled to open in November, with 540 spaces (boy, do we
ever need parking!!!!!) He is also excited about our own "Central Park," to
be adjacent to

this facility. It will hold many festivals and other outdoor events, in our
downtown area.

There are numerous events planned for the upcoming season at Old School
Square. Joe shared a number of them with us, whetting our appetite for the
culture being offered there.

Pick up a free copy of the "Atlantic Avenue" magazine, September issue, turn
to page 82, (p. 83, for a full-page picture) for more information on some of
the accomplishments and successes of Old School Square, and our "Culture
King of Delray," Mr. Joe Gillie. Also, visit www.oldschool.org
<http://www.oldschool.org/> .

By the way, one of the very important events slated for OSS is the Rotary
Club of Delray Beach's Service Above Self Award, November 27.

Next week, our guest speaker will be Police Chief Larry Schroeder.
