ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

September 25, 2007

President Godfrey presided over our meeting, with a good turnout for a rainy
day in Delray. Candace Etzler gave a nice invocation. Then, Steve Rich
stepped to the podium; lead us in a couple of "Rotary songs." Kudos to
Bruce Williams, for his beautiful music. We sang Happy Birthday to Tony
Allerton, who graciously donated $79.00 for his birthday (which had to be
much more

than his age). Tony had Leon Weekes as his "birthday guest."

Did anyone notice that gold ring in Harvey Brown's nose?....er, on his left
ring finger? Harvey and Marilyn were married last Wednesday. He said he
had to delay his honeymoon, due to his sick dog..I think. Harvey and
Marilyn, you are a great couple; we wish you both the very best.

Harvey Brown welcomed all our guests, including Jeff Dennis and Dorian
Trauger. Nick Loeb had his friend Renee' visiting from NY. Make ups were
done by Mike Campbell, Tom Stanley, Craig Hammett, Jess Sowards and Harvey
Brown. We also received Wayne Brockney's make up in NH. We thank each of
you for taking time to do the make ups, whether in person, or internet,
helping keep our attendance among the top in our District.

Sergeant at Arms Roy Simon gathered a total of $210.00. Harvey Brown, so
happy that Marilyn finally said "yes," donated $50.00, in celebration. It
was noted that Art NeJame was "visiting" with us today. Art is on official
leave, due to his business transition. We were all glad to see him, and
hope he can return soon.

(By the way, there is a new contest going on, known as "Know Your Simons."
Sadly, our first contestant, Kurt Godfrey was eliminated!)

Have you taken time to view our "bulletin board" in the foyer? Each week,
as you pick up your Rotary badge, note the board, with all the latest Rotary
happenings.

Alan Kornblau reminded us of our ongoing raffle, with the drawing on
December 6, at our Holiday Party, shared with the Boynton-Lantana, and
Delray Sunrise Rotary Clubs. Top prize is $4,000.00. $5,000.00 will go to
our Atlantic High School Scholarship Fund. Tickets are $20.00 each.
Wouldn't that make a nice holiday gift for someone?

The highlight of our day was when President Kurt Godfrey bestowed Honorary
membership to Delray Beach Mayor, Rita Ellis, (sponsor Mark Denkler) and
Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce President, Bill Wood (sponsor Ernie Simon).
Congratulations to both of you; we hope you can participate in many of our
Rotary functions. Both of these have given much to our community; we are
proud to have you join us.

Elinor Williams, of Loxahatchee Refuge attended our meeting, and told us of
their calendar fundraiser. For more information on this,

President-elect Steve Bates had the honor of introducing our guest speaker,
Delray Beach Mayor Rita Ellis. She and her husband Dean have been residents
of Delray Beach since 1972. They have raised two daughters in this area.
They are the owners of Climate Control Services, where she is President of
the company. Rita became active with the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of
Commerce and was appointed to their Board, serving as Chairman of the Board
in 2005, after being recognized as Small Business Person of the Year in
2000, and received the Ken Ellingsworth Community Service Award in 2001.

Rita Ellis served on our Delray Beach City Commission; she was elected to
her first term in March 2005. She has served and held many other prominent
positions on various boards throughout the city.

Mayor Ellis gave us a brief background on her childhood, back in West
Virginia, recalling her intrigue with books gifted from her uncle. She also
paraphrased JFK quotes. She praised Rotary and the good work we do, locally
and internationally. She thanked us for our support and referred to our
"Random Acts of Kindness." Welcome to Rotary Club of Delray Beach, Mayor
Rita Ellis!

Our Green Hat now exceeds $1,098.00! (Sorry Stormi.)

Next week's speaker will be Ms. Leavenworth, Area Director for PB County
Boys and Girls Clubs. The following week, our speaker will be our new Fire
Chief, David C. James.

Note: President Kurt Godfrey will be honored on Saturday evening, at the
Chamber of Commerce "Luminary Gala" with the Ken Ellingsworth Community
Service Award, along with other community leaders, including another fellow
Rotarian (Sunrise Club) C. Ron Allen. This award is presented each year to
a number of outstanding Chamber of Commerce members, of Delray Beach, for
commitment and generosity of time and talent in our community.
Congratulations!
