Rotary Ramblings - October 9, 2007

Called to order by President Kurt after a particularly delightful array of
piano pieces performed by our own Bruce Williams.

Invocation was given by Dave Harden and Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in
renditions of "America the Beautiful" and "Rotary".

Two birthdays - Fred Bonardi and Gerry Meeks and two anniversaries, Dave
O'Connell and Bill Arnst.

Harvey Brown introduced our two visitors, Jill Berman from NE Finance Met
Life and John O'Connell soon to be member, as well as announcing our two
makeups - Paul Bod in the old fashioned way at Delray Sunrise and Stefani
Martin who subscribes to the Bruce Wenzell method online.

Fred Bonardi gave the stock report - everything up - market up 40 points -
NASDAQ up 13 points and S&P up as well. Everyone is wondering whether the
Fed will lower rates again.

Ernie Simons, as Sergeant-at-arms collected $283.77 from a variety of
sources. Gerry Meeks - $7.77 for his birthday. Fred Bonardi $47 for his
birthday. And for their anniversaries - Dave O'Connell $54 and Bill Arnst
$33 respectively.

Delray Rotary Raffle - Alan Kornblue announced not even 100 tickets sold.
Need to get moving. Alan had posters for anyone who wanted to put them up
in their businesses as well as more tickets.

Guest speaker introduced by Bob Teninga - Fire Chief David James, born and
raised in Miami, former Marine with a bachelors degree in public information
from Barry University. Chief James indicated he officially started
September 1, 2007. He grew up a stutterer - and every time he is in front
of a microphone he is reminded of that because now you cannot get him away
from the microphone. However, he promised to be brief. Ironically, his
office located next to where his mother's cousin used to own a business, so
coming to Delray Beach was always an adventure. In addition, his twin
brother a former Assistant Chief in Miami Dade retired to teach tennis, and
is very impressed with Delray's tennis center.

This is Fire Prevention Week which has been extended to a month to encompass
all the activities. Our fire department has many activities planned to
recognize this and make people aware of the importance of fire prevention.
In addition, they take programs into the schools and other community venues
to increase awareness. So many disasters could be averted if people just
used smoke detectors. In addition to fire prevention, the fire department
includes rescue services. They are not only offering screenings for
hypertension, but many people do not have the resources to have this problem
address. They are also looking into partnerships with other agencies to
look into addressing the hypertension once it is identified thru the
screenings. The question arose whether fire rescue respects "Do No
Resuscitate" notices in homes. Chief James indicated when they see them -
absolutely. Unfortunately, quite often they are not prominently displayed,
so fire rescue resuscitates. He was asked whether he went into the fire
department directly from the marines. He indicated he originally wanted to
become a surgeon, but the extensive education (even with the limited GI
bill) was cost prohibitive; therefore, he changed his focus. But this way
he still saves lives - in a different way.

Total green hat was $1,116.50 - and Nancy Owens did not pull the ace - wow -
there may be only one card left by the time we get a winner.

Closed with our four-way test. Let's all remember to practice these
principles in all our affairs.

Respectfully submitted,
Sue Miller
