ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
October 23, 2007
I will start by thanking Paul Barde for taking notes for the Ramblings; they
came to me via special courier, from Bob's Printing (Kurt Godfrey's
business). I will now attempt to relate to you.
President Godfrey called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m. Gerry Meeks
gave the invocation (adding his own request to win the 50-50 raffle). Sam
Altdoerffer led the chorus in song, with old familiar songs, "Take Me Out to
the Ballgame" (Miracle League Game), and "Smile." Happy Birthday was sung
to Roy Simon, Hack Allen and last, but not least, Bruce Wenzel. (Remember,
last week Wally Doud "paid" tribute to Bruce.) Jess and Judy Sowards are
celebrating their anniversary. We wish all of you the very best.
Harvey Brown announced yet another successful shuttle launch, with "all
systems go." Yahoo! Harvey announced that Dave Harden did a make up at
Boynton-Lantana Rotary Club. He welcomed guests Linda Cohen and Ira Fine.
I have also received notes from Wayne Brockney and Bill Talen, stating their
make ups in various places. We appreciate those who commit to doing make
ups, to help keep our attendance at the top of the District.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock report, stating, in his humble opinion, "Alan
Greenspan should stop selling books, and just be quiet." (Yeh, for Fred.)
Sergeant at Arms Mike Campbell raked in a total of $294.00, with three
birthdays and one anniversary. He also announced Habitat for Humanity's
project, slated for November 20, 8-12 noon. (More later.)
Betsy Owen has Loxahatchee calendars for sale at $10.00 each, with $5.00
going to our club.
Ernie Simon prepared, and read a Memorial Resolution for Eric Meyer. After
the reading, the club had a standing moment of silence, in honor of our
deceased member. A copy of the Resolution will be sent to Eric's family.
Leo Phillips announced that he is looking for hosts and lodging for our GSE
Team, visiting in May.
If Dave Armstrong had attended, I am sure he would have thanked all those
who played in the Scholastic Achievement Golf Tournament last weekend.
President Godfrey noted they are putting together another order for "Rotary
Shirts." The cost of these high quality shirts, with the Rotary emblem,
will be $40.00. A sign up sheet will be available next week.
Nick Loeb announced he is sponsoring a "Chef's Tasting Party," to benefit
United Cerebral Palsy of Palm Beach & Mid-Coast Counties. This will be
November 11, 2007, 4-7 p.m., at the Colony Palm Beach. Event tickets:
305-325-9018, or www.ucpsouthflorida.org <http://www.ucpsouthflorida.org/> .
Deborah Ferrell and Craig Hammett introduced a new project to our club,
called "Adopt A Family." The Achievement Center (formerly CCCC) will choose
a family for us to adopt; the committee will purchase gifts for the entire
family, giving them a Christmas to remember. They are asking each Rotarian
to donate a minimum of $10.00. Please make your check out to Delray Beach
Rotary Fund, with a memo stating "Adopt A Family." All donations are needed
by December 11, meeting. This needs to be in by then, allowing one week for
purchasing, wrapping, and preparing to present to the chosen family at our
December 18 meeting.
IMPORTANT DATES: Service Above Self Award, November 27th, 11:30 a. m. Old
School Square.
Holiday Party, December 6, Delray Beach Golf Club Restaurant, 6:00 p.m.
Bob Teninga introduced our guest speaker, Stephanie Shipley, form the Delray
Beach Historical Society. She gave an update on where they are, and where
they are going. She asked all of us to get involved in the remainder of
Heritage Month (October). There is a trolley car tour of downtown, telling
of the history of Delray Beach. A special note: Hack Allen noted that the
picture of the Weiner & Aronson, PA office was the home of Coach Clark, of
old Delray School. He stated that he and Ernie Simon played football there,
but that Jim Pignato married the coach's daughter! Small world, huh?
President Kurt Godfrey had the privilege of installing our newest member,
John O'Connell. John, we welcome you to Rotary Club of Delray Beach.
Jan Powell, thanks for missing the Ace; now I still have a chance to win the
"Green Hat." (It's getting greener by the week.) The total is now up to
$1,379.50.
The meeting was adjourned, after reciting the "Four Way Test."
