ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
November 6, 2007
The weather is beautiful; it is time for the Snowbirds to fly south to roost
for the winter.
President Kurt Godfrey presided over another spectacular meeting. Sylvia
Pecaro, gave a beautiful invocation (looks as if she has good training; some
of you may not know, her husband is an Episcopal Priest). Jimmy
Weatherspoon had the crowd in an upbeat mood, leading the singing.
Bruce Williams had us tapping our toes, as he entertained us during our
meal. Steve Bates seems to always "pay tribute" to Bruce, in appreciation
for his fine music, after Bruce has exited.
We sang Happy Anniversary to Candace Etzler. We congratulate Candace and
Emil on their tenth anniversary.
Nick Loeb, creating his own applause, stepped to the podium and welcomed
visiting Rotarians Dorian Trauger, Dr. Oswald Wertz, Terry Johnson and Fred
Jones. Make ups were done by Deb Ferrell (2x's), Sylvia Pecaro and Ellie
Lowery. Wayne Brockney reports that he is still doing make ups in the cold
north; he will be back this month, however.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock report. It seemed to be on a "see-saw;"
however, he did comment that YTD the market is still up. Oil and gold are
at an all time high, as we can attest to each time, as we "fill up."
Candace Etzler, assisted by Mike Campbell, was Sergeant at Arms. She
reported collecting $102.00.
Lyn Huckle gave us a report from Gay Vela, regarding her daughter. Gay, our
prayers are with both of you.

Tom Stanley had the pleasure of "keeping it in the family," as he introduced
our guest speaker, Attorney Earl Denney, of the well-known practice of
Searcy, Denney, Scarola, Barnhart and Shipley, Attorneys at Law. He is
vice-president of the firm and is recognized as one of Florida's leading
medical malpractice experts.
A Florida Bar Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer, Mr. Denney was chosen to
be included in the first edition of Who's Who in American Law. After moving
to South Florida, he has practiced law in West Palm Beach for thirty-six
years. Among his many credits, is being elected to the EAGLE Hall of Fame
in 1994.
Mr. Denney's commitment to improving the quality of public education has
greatly benefited Palm Beach County, where he is past president of the
Education Partnership and has served on the board of the South FL Science
Museum and Planetarium. He, at present, is President of Leukemia, Lymphoma
and Myeloma Society of Palm Beach County. He spoke with us on this subject.
Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma are cancers that originate in the bone marrow
or lymphatic tissue as the result of an acquired genetic injury to the DNA
of a single cell. The cell then becomes malignant and multiplies
continuously. This abnormal accumulation interferes with the production of
healthy blood cells. An estimated 823,349 Americans are living with blood
cancers.
"The Leukemia and lymphoma Society is the world's larges voluntary health
organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and
patient services. We offer a variety of programs and services in support of
our mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and
improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The Society is
a nonprofit organization that relies on the generosity of individual and
corporate contributions to advance its mission."
The Society's Information Resource Center, staffed by oncology social
workers and health educators, provides the most current information on blood
cancers and clinical trials free of charge. Call the IRC at (800) 995-4572,
or visit the Society's Web site at www.LLS.org.
The Green Hat has eleven remaining cards in it; the total is now over
$1,522.00! (I had my chance, and blew it!)
Next week, Tom Stanley has another interesting speaker for us. He will be
Chris Storkerson, CFP, Vice President, Wealth Strategist - Northern Trust,
Delray Beach. His topic: Philanthropic Highlights.
