ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

November 13, 2007

Ahhhhhhh..another fine autumn day in Delray. The snowbirds are coming back
in flocks; the air is full of excitement. Rotary Club of Delray Beach is
abuzz with so many wonderful events/projects happening.

Your Board of Directors/members met at 7:30 a. m. today, at Ellie's Diner,
led by our illustrious president, Kurt Godfrey. Decisions were made; others
are in the "working."

At noon, President Godfrey stepped to the podium to once again lead a
dynamic Rotary meeting. Sam Altdoerffer, with his excellent singing voice,
led us in some of our favorite songs, paying tribute to our Veterans. All
veterans were asked to stand; we had about a dozen proud men to stand to a
round of applause. Leo Phillips gave an invocation, also thanking God for
our veterans, and present troops.

Harvey Brown had the pleasure of reminiscing for a moment about his father,
who was one of Delray's "war heroes," along with some of our other members.
Harvey took a moment to mention his passion, our space program. He had the
pleasure of seeing yet another rocket, the size of a 23-story building; lift
off into space, carrying a satellite that will perform more technology for
our "ever shrinking" world. He welcomed Oswald Wertz, from Germany.
Lorraine Weingest had her business associate Tom Virden as her guest today.
She is to be inducted next week. We are looking forward to the induction of
Fire Chief David Jones, and Becky Woodbridge in the near future.

Alan Armour was visiting with us today. He and his wife, Barbara,
generously donated $100.00 to our club, in honor of Bruce Wenzel's 80th
birthday, in October. (Bruce, you sure are getting a lot of mileage out of
that birthday). A couple of weeks ago, Wally and Jean Dowd sent $100.00 in
honor of his birthday.

Fred Bonardi gave the stock report; the market was up 175 points at the time
of his report. Oil was down to $91.50; gold prices are dropping. Fred also
collected $187.00, serving as Sergeant at Arms.

Mike Campbell, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity, Boca Raton,
thanked the ten-member crew that helped him on Saturday to install the
irrigation lines for a home they are building for a family in the area.
(The pictures were sent out a few days ago.) These people worked hard and
really looked "stylish" in their yellow "Rotarian at Work" T-shirts. We all
need one of these shirts, and put them to use in one of our next projects.
(Price: $10.00)

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Service Above Self Award, starring Ernie Simon; Tuesday, November 27, 11:30
a. m. Old School Square. (Front walk.) Price for this luncheon is $15.00.

entering the gym, after the ceremony. We expect many guests; therefore,
this procedure will expedite things. Ellie's Diner will be catering the
event.

Adopt-A-Family: Chairpersons Craig Hammett and Deb Ferrell. They are
looking for at least $10.00 per member to buy gifts for the Louis Jean
Family. Please be generous. Last week, our guest speaker, Attorney Denney
stated he would donate $100.00, if we had a matching donation; we got
it!!!!!!!!

Holiday Party - December 6, 6:00 p.m. Delray Beach Golf Course Restaurant.
Dinner and dancing, with the Eclipse Band. We are working in conjunction
with the Boynton-Lantana Rotary and Sunrise Rotary of Delray Beach. So, put
on your "glad rags, your dancing shoes" and join us for a fun-filled
evening. Admission for this event is $50.00 per person. Sign up sheet will
be in the foyer next week.

Achievement Center (formerly CCCC): Bob Teninga stated that he is looking
for volunteers to help at the center, at least one day a week. The duties
will be reading, teaching crafts, or playing with the children.

Deb Ferrell introduced our Student of the Month, Amanda Adams. Amanda is a
lovely, bright young lady. She is a senior at Atlantic High School, where
she is in the IB Program. She aspires to attend UF, to earn a degree in
Spanish Language and Literature. She has a plethora of extracurricular
activities, awards and honors. Her proud father and mother, Matthew and
Esther Adams attended.

Amanda introduced her choice of Teacher of the Month, Jacqueline Bronkie.
She has been teaching 14 years; seven of them at Atlantic High School. She
teaches the final year in the International Baccalaureate Spanish Program.
Her quote: "Most important of all, I am who I am today because I was the
recipient of a Rotarian Ambassadorial Scholarship from the State of
Wisconsin in 1974, to pursue graduate studies in Spanish. I went to Bogota,
Colombia, and it was a life altering experience. I stayed ten years and
became fluent in Spanish, which I now speak without a Wisconsin accent.."

Tom Stanley introduced our guest speaker, Chris Storkerson, CFP, Vice
President, Wealth Strategist - Northern Trust, Delray Beach. Chris has over
10 years of experience in the investment business, including wealth
management and private equity. He works with both families and institutions
as a financial advisor and planner. He received an M. B. A. degree from the
University of Southern California with Beta Gamma Sigma honors. He also
earned a B. A. degree in Economics from Middlebury College, where he was an
All-American Lacrosse player.

Mr. Storkerson stated we are in the golden age of Philanthropy. He gave a
number of ways to gift money to charity, and the reasons why people do so.

Next week, Leo Phillips will be our speaker. He will elaborate more on how
money may be gifted to Rotary.

Our green hat continues to soar. Today it was $1,593.00; Steve Rich failed
to pick the Ace out of eleven cards! We all have another chance next week.
