ROTARY RAMBLINGS

    ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

December 4, 2007

We had a full house today; the snowbirds are returning, the members are even
attending in full force. President Kurt Godfrey conducted yet another fine
meeting. Dave O'Connell gave our invocation. Sam Altdoerffer did a fine
job of leading the singing, along with the spectacular accompaniment of
Bruce Williams. Sam lead us in "America the Beautiful;" with his
outstanding voice, he made us sound good.

We sang Happy Birthday to the well-known comedy team of Harvey Brown and Bob
Teninga. (If you attended the Bingo Party, you know what I am talking
about.) Harvey donated $46.00; Bob donated $49.00. Happy Birthday, guys!
We sang Happy Anniversary to Ed Voss, who donated $50.00. Ed and Mary, we
wish you a Happy Anniversary, and thank each of you for your generosity.

Harvey Brown had the pleasure of welcoming only two Rotarian visitors, Mike
Alfele, of Lake Worth Rotary, and Hal Fowles, Boca Raton. Jan Powell had as
her guest, Evelyn Dodson. It was good to see Anne Bright back, after an
illness.

Fred Bonardi while wearing his "stock market hat" gave us the stock report;
all was down at time of his report. He stated that the market has
experienced a "quiet year." He did state that oil is down to $87.60; gold
is up to $800.00.

In his "Sergeant at Arms Hat," Fred reported gathering in a whopping total
of $335.00 today.

Cliff Ripley announced today that Leo Phillips has assumed presidency of the
Scholastic Scholarship Foundation. Cliff Ripley founded this wonderful
foundation thirty years ago. We congratulate Leo, and commend Cliff, and
his wonderful dedication to education over the years.

We were also informed that Leo Phillips has been designated as the nominee
for Rotary District 6930 Governor, for 2010-2011.

Kay Johnson paid $20.00 to our Sergeant at Arms, to hand out invitations to
St. Joseph School's "Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols," December 12, 13,
2007, at 7:00 p.m. For more details, call Kay at 732-2045.

President Godfrey again thanked Nancy Owens and her committee of Leo
Phillips, Bill Adams and Kurt Godfrey, on their fine job of selecting, and
carrying out the ceremony of Service Above Self. Ernie stated he had
"special feelings for being honored by our Rotary Club." (A Palm Beach Post
article on Ernie Simon is attached. You may click on this, and read the
review.)

Alan Kornblau stated that the Raffle has been extended about two more weeks
while he gathers in all the ticket stubs for the drawing; just in time for a
great holiday, for some lucky person.

Candace Etzler says the Dictionary Project is going well. If you have not
participated, but would like to, the next time will be Dec. 11, 8:30 a. m.
Orchard View School, Dec. 12, 8:30 a. m. Village Academy. You may contact
Candace at 703-5923.

Craig Hammett and Deb Ferrell report that some of you have not contributed
to our Adopt-A-Family Program. They will be collecting donations next
Tuesday. The family we are sponsoring will be guests of our club the
following Tuesday.

Our guest speaker was Jennifer Cohee Thomason, Osceola District Executive,
Gulf Stream Council of Boy Scouts of America. We were all impressed when
she asked if any members of our club were Eagle Scouts. Five proud Eagles
stood; Art Nejame, Hal Fowles (Boca), Dave Harden, Jess Sowards and Kurt
Godfrey. She stated that out of 100, three statistically become Eagle
Scouts.

I, personally, know what scouting did for my three sons. It taught them
self-reliance, and to do for others, through volunteerism, just to name a
few.

She thanked our club for chartering Group 303, a co-ed group ranging in age
14-21. Many fine leaders come from scouting; some of them will be
Rotarians, someday.

We still have no winner of the Green Hat! The total is now $1,850.00, with
only eight cards left!

DECEMBER 6, 2007, 6:00 P.M. HOLIDAY PARTY, DELRAY BEACH GOLF COURSE
RESTAURANT. Dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m., dancing to follow. Come
and join us for this happy occasion. We are sharing this good time with
Delray Sunrise Rotary and Boynton-Lantana Rotary.

Next week: Our speaker will be Lt. Trisha Dunkelmann, topic: Carbon Monoxide
& Fire Safety.

December 18: Choral Group from St. Joseph's Episcopal School (Kay Johnson,
Head School Administrator). Craig Hammett and Deb Ferrell will present our
Adopt-A-Family.

Happy Hanukkah

Merry Christmas
