    ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

December 11, 2007

It is another glorious day in Paradise----Delray Beach, FL!

Many of us started our day by attending our monthly Rotary Board of
Directors Meeting. It is held the second Tuesday of each month, 7:30 a. m.
in the Marilyn Room at Ellie’s Diner. All members are encouraged to attend,
and see for yourself how hard your officers work for the Rotary Club of
Delray Beach. Much was discussed, debated and resolved. (Breakfast is
always served!)

As we entered the hall at noon, friendly members at the front door, and the
music of our maestro, Bruce Williams, greeted us, He was really swinging
to the holiday music.

President Kurt Godfrey, again, presided over our meeting. Jim Pignato gave
the invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon, in his usual jovial manner, led us in
our spelling lesson: R-O-T-A-R-Y; then our theme song.

We sang Happy Birthday to Jess Sowards, who donated $47.00, and to Georgina
Rice, who donated $50 something(?) We wish you both the happiest ever, and
thanks for your generosity.

Harvey Brown welcomed one visiting Rotarian, from MI. Betsy Owen had as her
guest, Linda Parker-Jennings. Jan Powell had as her guest, a co-worker,
Bill Hanrahan, of Riverside Bank.

This is the first publication for membership, Evelyn Dobson, who works in
affordable housing. We also have Ira Fine, who works in Equipment Rental.
The Board interviewed Fire Chief David C. James today. He is to be inducted
into the club in the near future.

Nancy Owens, of the officers nominating committee, has asked me to publish
the roster of officers for the upcoming year, so the club may vote on this.
They are as follows:

President: Steve Bates

President-elect: Bob Teninga

Vice-President: Tom Stanley

Secretary: Sue Miller

Treasurer: Janet Powell

Please look at this and be prepared to vote on this roster next week.

Fred Bonardi, wearing his stock market reporter hat, informed us that the
market was quiet at noon; he proposed a ¼ percent rate decrease, which did
happen this afternoon.

Fred then gave us the total earnings of the Sergeant at Arms, which was more
exciting, at $174.00. Kay Johnson gave $5.00 to announce her school holiday
program, at St. Joseph’s School, Dec. 12-13, 6:15 p.m.

Bob Teninga told the group that our Holiday Party was a success, and that we
came out “in the black!” Those of you that missed the party, missed a good
time. The food was good; the music was good; the company was fabulous.
(Some of us really had a good time!)

Bill Arnst, we thank you for heading up another successful Holiday Wreath
Project.

The Dictionary Project has been a “howling” success. Candace Etzler has
been doing a fabulous job of chairing this project.

Alan Kornblau gave us good news! Next week the big winner of our raffle
will be announced at our noon meeting (Dec. 18). If you have tickets/money
still out, please see Alan immediately! You may reach him at 266-9488.

Our Green Hat is now worth over $1,960.50, since Sam did not draw the Ace.
We now have SEVEN cards left!

Craig Hammett and Deb Ferrell, co-chairs of the Adopt-A-Family Project,
announced today they would be buying for our adopted family, the Louis Jean
Family, which was chosen by the Achievement Center. This well-deserved
family will be our guests at our meeting next week, as we present them with
their gifts. This is a new project implemented by our club this year.

President-elect Steve Bates is asking for volunteers to be host families,
for the school year 2008-2009. Our exchange students will be from the
Ukraine; they speak fluent English. This could be a very educational year
for some lucky family. He needs a response by January 1.

Bill Adams had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, Lt. Tricia
Dunkelmann, who has been a firefighter/paramedic for 16 years. Bill worked
with her for many years, before his retirement. Her husband is a firefighter
with PB Co. Firefighters. She is the mother of two young girls.

She spoke to us about how to save a life with CPR and AED (Automated
External Defibrillator). This machine is a computerized medical device that
can check a person’s heart rhythm. It can recognize a rhythm that requires
a shock. The AED uses voice prompts, light and text messages to tell the
rescuer the steps to take. The Delray Beach Fire-Rescue offers two CPR
courses. For more information on this, call 561-243-7456, or e-mail:
dunkelmann at ci.delray-beach.fl.us.

Note: Frank, our beloved waiter at Ellie’s is back in the hospital. Our
member, Arthur Reef is in ill health; keep both of them in your prayers.

Next week, we will be collecting our yearly donation for our wait staff at
Ellie’s Diner, to show our appreciation of their hard work, all year through
(hurry back, Frank).

Our entertainment for our last meeting of 2007 will be the choir of St.
Joseph’s Episcopal School. There will be no meeting the following two
weeks, due to Christmas and New Year’s Day falling on the consecutive
Tuesdays.

Upcoming Project: In January, Bob Teninga will be heading up a program for
our club at the Achievement Center. It will consist of volunteering once
monthly, for one to two hours, reading, doing crafts/art and interacting
with these needy children. Try it once; they will steal your heart!

Enjoy your Holidays!

Do something for someone in need! You can make a difference!
