ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
January 15, 2008
The day started for many of us with a Board of Directors meeting at Ellie's
Marilyn Room, with President Kurt Godfrey presiding. Seventeen members
attended. The board passed the update of Bylaws and Constitution of Rotary
Club of Delray Beach. A copy of this will be available for the membership
next week, for review, and then a vote will be taken on the 29th by the
membership.
Did anyone notice Dave Richards as you entered the room? He's the guy
wearing the Dolphins shirt, beating on a soup pot. He is again collecting
for the "Souper Bowl" Food Project. He hopes we can exceed our goal of last
year. You have two more meetings to participate. The proceeds will go to
the Caring Kitchen, in Delray Beach. It will be counted in our national
Souper Bowl, on Super Bowl Day.
President Godfrey again presided over the noon meeting. Hack Allen gave the
invocation. Sam Altdoerffer led us in singing. Did you notice the "new"
piano that Bruce Williams was playing? He was making it sound good. Tony
Allerton procured this piano; we wish to thank him again.
Bill Talen is back! He donated $10.00 for the occasion, as well as $83.00
for his birthday. Leo Phillips donated $63.00 for his birthday, also. We
wish you, our friends, a wonderful birthday, and thanks for your generosity.
Harvey Brown had the pleasure of welcoming five visiting Rotarians. Tony
Allerton presented our banner to Tom Hustadt, of Duluth, MN. Lorraine
Weingest and David Harden did make ups, helping keep our club attendance up.
We thank both of you. Jan Powell had as her guest, Joe Farkas, Manager of
Peninsula Bank. Lorraine also had Hal Williams as her guest.
Leo Phillips proudly introduced to the audience a special guest, our
Ambassadorial Scholar to Buenos Aires, Christina Dumbrowski. Christina told
us a bit of her plans, and thanked us for the opportunity.
Craig Hammett read a letter from the Achievement Center, on behalf of our
Adopt-A-Family. We thank all who participated in this worthy project.
Bill Adams introduced an "old school buddy" as our guest speaker, Dr. Jeanne
Watkins-Langford. She is an educator, and has been since 1972. She teaches
at Pine Grove Elementary, where the students are in the lowest 25%. Of the
515 students, 50% are ESL students, with 98% on free lunch. These students
are from homes that speak no English, and very limited in their home
language. Her answer to the education of these students is "Access to
books!" They have Friday afternoon Reading Club, and Chess Club. They use
very innovative ways to teach these children to read.
Dr. Langford introduced her co-speaker, Colette Ceparano, who does volunteer
reading at Pine Grove School. They are looking for guest readers, to work
with one child, to read to, and allow the child to read to them.
Delray Beach Fire Chief David James extends a warm welcome to the community
for an open house at Fire Rescue Headquarters, 502 W. Atlantic Avenue,
Saturday, February 9, 2008, from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Jan Powell, Branch
Manager of Riverside Bank (one of our members) will present Delray Beach
Fire Rescue with the Hometown Hero Award in recognition of its contribution
and service to the city.
Don't forget to visit our Rotary Club of Delray Beach website for updates of
latest photos from our meetings and events.
