ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

January 22, 2008

President Kurt Godfrey presided over a “full-house” today. Bill Adams gave
a lovely invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon, in his lively manner, led us in a
couple of favorites.

Bruce Williams never sounded better! Since our “new” piano has arrived, he
has had it tuned! He gave us a sample with his lovely medley of some of our
very favorites. I think he used every note on that piano! Bruce, we all
enjoyed your “concert!”

Steve and Helen Rich are celebrating their 59th anniversary. He donated
$59.00 to the club in honor of it. Happy Anniversary and thank you.

Harvey Brown welcomed two visiting Rotarians. Craig Hammett, we thank you
for doing a make up. We sure had too many AWOL’s, who got “Booed!”

Fred Bonardi had the sad job of reporting on the stock market. At time of
his report, the DOW was down 125 points, S&P down 20 points and NASDAQ down
50 points. Gold is now at $893.00. He stated some of the blue chip stocks
are doing well. Feds cut rates ¾ point. Let us hope for a better report
next week.

Roy Simon, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $161.00.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Rotary Golf Shirts are now on sale; see Anne Bright.

Bob Teninga reported that January 31, would be our first Achievement Center
Reading/Craft day. This is scheduled for the last Thursday of each month.
If you wish to work with toddlers, the time is 10:00 to 12:00. If you wish
to work with K-middle school, the time is 3:00-4:00 pm. Please see Bob, and
sign up for this project; it will warm your heart.

Mr. “Souper Bowl” Dave Richards did another tremendous job of collecting
funds today, while wearing his Dolphin shirt. We now have a total of
$319.00, with one more week to donate, before the Super Bowl. Our proceeds
will be donated to Delray’s Caring Kitchen. This means all funds will stay
in Delray Beach, to feed the hungry, but will be reported, and count as part
of the national total.

Harvey Brown proudly introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Bob Polhamus, a
retired Marine Pilot, who flew 174 missions between 1965 and 1975, in Viet
Nam. He said they were based 150 miles offshore on aircraft carriers. He
mentioned that John McCain was shot down in 1967, and that McCain was part
of a military family. His father was a commander, and his grandfather was a
commander in Japan in 1945.

Mr. Polhamus interjected that much is being done in Iraq that is never
reported. His opinion is that the media is the biggest problem!

He also gave recognition to Harvey Brown, Sr.’s career, stating he flew 64
missions during the Korean War.

Mr. Polhamus holds office in many organizations in the area; one of the most
outstanding is Governor of West Palm Beach Quiet Birdmen, or “QB’s.” This
is a prestigious organization of pilots that may be joined by invitation
only. Our own Harvey Brown, Jr., following his father’s example, is a
member. I hope that we can get Mr. Polhamus as a speaker again soon, due to
the lack of time he had to speak.

The Board of Directors voted to donate the remaining $1,000.00 to our Delray
Beach Library, for a total of $5,000.00. When you visit our library, pay a
visit to the room upstairs with our name on it.

Our condolences go out to the family of Arthur Reef, in his passing on
January 15, 2008.

Next Week: Our guest speaker will be Peter Famin, former president of Boca
Rotary Club. He is the author of “Wake up America.”
