ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
January 29, 2008
Today, as we entered the Flamingo Room, Bruce Williams was really in rare
form, pumping out tunes we all love to hum and dance to. Bruce, we all
truly appreciate your music.
President Kurt Godfrey led another fantastic Rotary meeting today. Dave
O'Connell gave the invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon got us in a happy mood,
while leading the singing. We also sang Happy Birthday to Lyn Huckle and
Ray Ripley. Lyn gave $82.00 and Ray gave $65.00 in honor of their
birthdays. We appreciate your generosity.
Harvey Brown, working his way through his admirers and hecklers, welcomed
about seven visiting Rotarians, including a couple of foreign visitors.
Bill Arnst presented our banner to Ben from Hauppauge, NY. By the way, this
is a good time to give kudos to Bill for all the "behind the scenes work" he
does each week for our club. Bill, you are appreciated.
Make ups were done by Dr. Stefani Martin and Mark Denkler (2x's) while
seated at their computers. We thank both of you. There are some very
interesting programs online, regarding Rotary.
President Godfrey mentioned the Rotary golf shirts are still available; see
Anne Bright. These are good quality golf shirts with our Rotary emblem on
the left front.
Dave Richards, our "Super Man," collected a total of $532.00 for our Souper
Bowl of Caring. The proceeds will go to our local Caring Kitchen. We thank
each of you for your generous contributions to help feed the poor. As you
watch the Super Bowl, note the amount given on behalf of Souper Bowl of
Caring, and know that you were a part of it. Dave, you are truly a caring
person; thank you.
Bob Teninga reminded us of our upcoming project at the Achievement Center.
Starting on Thursday, and the last Thursday of each month, our club will be
represented by numerous volunteers reading and doing crafts with the
children there. If you would like to be a part of this rewarding program,
contact Bob Teninga.
Bob Teninga also presented coupon books, with savings on numerous services
in our local area. The books will sell for $20.00, with $10.00 of the
proceeds going to our club.
Sergeant at Arms Candace Etzler collected a total of $263.00; way to go,
Candace.
Harvey Brown had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, a friend and
colleague of his in the insurance business. He is Bob Rollins, of the
Beacon Group, Boca Raton. Mr. Rollins is the former president of the Rotary
Club of Boca Raton.
Mr. Rollins mentioned that Harvey's father, Harvey Brown, Sr., was an
inspiration to him, in the insurance business. This has to make Harvey,
Jr., very proud of his heritage.
His topic was, of course, Florida Property Insurance. The timing was
perfect.on Election Day. He mentioned the devastation caused by recent
hurricanes, starting with Hurricane Andrew, and its catastrophic effect on
Homestead. This was largely because of poor building codes. Since then,
building codes are much more stringent; however, we all know how devastating
Hurricane Wilma was to our local area. Poor insurance companies, such as
Poe Insurance, which is now insolvent, among many others, caught many of us.
His final answer to all this devastation was "Prayer." (That we will have
mild hurricane seasons.)
President Godfrey informed the club of the passing of one of our faithful
Rotarians, John Arnold. All will miss John; he was such a wonderful family
man, so proud of his family. Our condolences go out to Lovelle and their
children.
Ernie Simon failed to win the green hat of $146.50.
Next week: Program Chair for February will be Betsy Owen. Her guest
speaker for February 5 will be Peter Famin, of Boca Rotary, and the author
of Wake up America.
