ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
February 12, 2008
The day began with President Kurt Godfrey presiding over a well-organized,
well-attended board of directors meeting in the Marilyn Room, at Ellie's.
Wayne Brockney brought us up to date on our Fund and Operating Accounts.
Love is surely in the air! At noon, as each lady entered the Flamingo Room,
they were greeted by Cliff Ripley who handed us a lovely long stem rose;
what a gentleman! Cliff had his "sweetheart," Madeleine, awaiting him at
his table. Then, there was Bruce Williams playing all those romantic love
songs for the crowd. Some of the others that brought their "sweethearts"
were Kurt Godfrey, introducing his lovely wife Denise; Wayne Brockney, with
his wife Donna; Leo Phillips, with his wife Pat, and Al Seldomridge, with
his wife Shirley. We had one of our favorite "old-timers" with us today,
Bruce Galloway, a dedicated Rotarian for many, many years. He was the guest
of Joyce Lunsford. Bruce, it was so good to see you at the meeting.
Jimmy Weatherspoon got us off to a good start with singing "Let Me Call You
Sweetheart, accompanied by Bruce Williams. Mike Campbell and Melissa are
celebrating their 20th anniversary, so he graciously donated $20.00,
stating, "It seems like only yesterday."
Since Harvey Brown was out celebrating his first Valentine's Day as
Marilyn's husband, Craig Hammett did the honors of welcoming the visiting
Rotarians and guests. (Harv, he got more applause than you did.) John
Ahearn was back with us from the frozen north. We also saw the smiling face
of Vison Chonsuksuri, just returned from Thailand; welcome back, both of
you.
Fred Bonardi gave us a very encouraging stock market report. At the time,
the DOW was up 205 points. He announced also, there is a 30-day freeze on
foreclosures, thus hoping to help the economy. Alan Kornblau had his usual
weekly picture in the paper, costing him another $5.00. Fred collected a
total of $111.00 today.
ANNOUNCEMENT: For those of you who ordered Rotary polo shirts, they will be
available next week.
Coupon Books are available from Bob Teninga. They are $20.00 each, with
$10.00 going to our club. They contain many good services with substantial
savings at local businesses.
The Delray Affair will be coming up the last weekend of March. Bob Teninga
is already looking for volunteers. Please mark this on your calendar.
Governor-elect Betsy Owen had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker,
whom she stated was her mentor, Past District Governor Jean Starkey. Jean
is now serving as District 6930 Foundation Chairperson. She oversees all of
our Foundation Committees (District Simplified Grants, International
Matching Grants, Ambassadorial and Peace Scholar Committees, University
Teacher Grants Committee, Group Study Exchange, Annual Giving, The Permanent
Fund, Polio Plus, the Paul Harris Society and Sustaining Members.)
Jean Starkey is a native of Merritt Island, FL, where her grandfather, a
German immigrant settled in 1919. The government to build the site of
Kennedy Space Center reclaimed his homesteaded land of 80 acres. She is the
owner of Aladdin Realty.
Jean started her lecture with a video of a small portion of what "matching
grants" in Rotary is all about. She explained, with the aid of charts for
each of us, how our donations to Rotary Foundation is held for three years,
then all money is used 100% for charity, stating that 50% comes back to our
District, available for matching grants projects. She encouraged each of us
to participate in this program.
Next week: Our guest speaker will be Immediate Past District Governor Larry
Labadie, who will speak on Permanent Fund.
Happy Valentine's Day to everyone!
