ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

March 18, 2008

Today, Ira Fine, one of our newest members, greeted us at the door. At his
side was Bob Teninga, soliciting volunteers for working the Delray Affair on
March 28, 29, 30. Please help us out; it is fast approaching.

President Godfrey presided over our meeting to a packed house. Steve Bates
gave a lovely invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon, feeling very patriotic, after
Steve's prayer, led us in singing "America." Of course, Maestro Bruce
Williams had already royally entertained us.

Harvey Brown, feeling smug after such thunderous applause, greeted about
five visiting Rotarians. My guest was Jan Tennyson, Founder of Dare to
Dream, Children's Foundation, Dallas TX. Leo Phillips had Ed Rowen, 2009
District Governor, and Ron Ferguson as his guests.

Bill Talen had another of his lovely daughters with him today, Ruth from MN.
She is the third, of five, that he has had the pleasure of introducing to
our Rotary Club. Bill stated that Ruth's daughter would be a Rotary
Exchange Student to Sweden next year. Ruth will also host a student from
India. This is a wonderful Rotary opportunity for all. Steve Bates had two
visitors with him again this week.

Fred Bonardi quickly stepped to the podium to tell the good news about the
market at the time. The DOW was up 270 points; the NASDAQ up 50 points; the
S&P was up 34 points. This was at noon today; he was expecting another
interest rate drop in the afternoon.

Candace Etzler, Sergeant at Arms, gathered in a total of $103.00. She
announced that Steve Bates's son Michael has just become a Sergeant with the
WPB Police Department.

Ernie Simon read a lovely Resolution regarding a true Rotarian, John Arnold.
A copy of this memorial will be sent to his widow, Lovella.

Bob Teninga reminded us that next Thursday is Reading/Play day at the
Achievement Center. He is looking for volunteers to help at 9:00 a. m., and
3:00 p.m. to help with homework.

Sue Miller announced the Annual Bingo Party would be held on April 17. She
is looking for donations and raffles for this event. The tickets will be
$50.00 for dinner and one drink. This is a fun evening; please put this on
your calendar.

Harvey Brown had the pleasure of re-introducing his "flying buddy," Bob
Polhamus. Bob is a retired Marine Corps Captain/Fighter Pilot. He told us
of some of his hair-raising flying experiences. He flew many missions
during the Viet Nam war. They were a frustrated group of fliers, due to the
restrictions put on them by President Lyndon Johnson and Robert McNamara.
Many of the targets were "off limits." Some of his most tense moments were
flying off/on aircraft carriers.

Bob Polhamus is Governor of the "Quiet Birds" of Palm Beach County. This is
an elite group of fliers. You must have at least 500 hours flying time
logged, and be invited to join the "QB's." He flew a 747 for Northwest
Airlines, to the Far East for 32 years. (I believe he has logged a few
hours.) He is also very involved in the Shriner's; he is a 32-Degree Mason.
Today, he was promoting the upcoming Shriner Circus. When asked why he has
not become a Rotarian, he stated that his wife "would kill him," if he joins
one more thing. Seems this man leads a full life; he does have the Rotary
Spirit! Harvey thanks for bringing this interesting man to speak.

Betsy Owen did not win the green hat, worth $369.00.
