ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
April 8, 2008
The Rotary day started at 7:30 a.m. with the monthly board of directors
meeting in Ellie's Marilyn Room. President Kurt Godfrey presided with
expertise and expediency. Wayne Brockney brought us up to date on our
"finances."
Bob Teninga told the attendees that he had 35 volunteers helping with the
Delray Affair. He stated that we netted over $4,000.00 for scholarships.
On April 29, the scholarship awards will be given to deserving graduates at
Atlantic High School.
At noon, President Godfrey again presided over a full house. Dave Harden
gave a lovely invocation. "Jivin' Jimmy" Weatherspoon was back with us
after having knee surgery last week. He is doing quite well, and led us in
some of our favorite songs. (He does need to see Dr. Stefani for some new
"Rotary" eyeglasses, however.)
We sang Happy Birthday to Sam Altdoerffer and Tom Stanley. Sam donated
$82.00 and (young) Tom donated $31.00 to our club.
Harvey Brown, after the applause ceased, welcomed four visiting Rotarians.
Dave Harden did a make up. We had five visitors of Rotarians. Bob Teninga
was sitting with the three ladies. Juan Manzano, Department of
Environmental Services, Compliance Division Manager, City of Delray Beach,
was among the visitors and is looking our club over for membership.
Fred Bonardi bravely approached the podium, stating, "the market is down
today." At noon, the DOW was down 37 points; the NASDAQ down 10; the S&P
down 5 points. Gold was down to $915.00; Oil was $105.00. These are trying
times, folks.
On a lighter note, serving as Sergeant at Arms, Fred gathered in a total of
$315.00 today. We booed six AWOL's. Money was given on behalf of "Library
Appreciation Month." Dave Armstrong read a note from Don Lerch, who sent us
a $100.00 donation, on behalf of his longtime friend, our recently deceased
Rotarian friend, Arthur Reef.
Dave Armstrong gave $97.00 in honor of his mother who recently passed away.
Dave, your friends, the Rotary Club of Delray Beach, wish to pay our
condolences to you in your loss. You are so blessed to have had her so
long.
We also received a letter from John Arnold's widow, thanking our club for
our kindness during her bereavement.

13 recipients this year.)
Reading Day at the Achievement Center will be the last Thursday of April.
President Godfrey will be installing three new members next week. They are
Lorie Garland, Stephen Butera and Corbin Hankey.
Mike Campbell, Area Director for Habitat for Humanity has given us a
challenge to outnumber the Boca Rotary Club members in building a home on
April 26. The Boca Club will work from 8-12; our club will work 1-5 p.m.
The clubs will meet together for lunch on the jobsite. The house is located
at 303 S. W. Second Street, Delray Beach.
Pat Archer, along with the Sunrise Rotary Club, transported two tenth
graders from Atlantic High School, to our RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership
Assembly) this year. This is always enjoyed by the youth; hopefully, they
will be our guest speakers in the near future.
Steve Bates introduced our guest speaker. She is none other than our own
favorite cheerleader, Dr. Stefani Martin, Board Certified Optometrist. Her
topic was "What you can't see can hurt you!"
Dr. Martin is a native of the Chicago area. She received her Bachelor of
Science from University of Iowa. She graduated with honors from the College
of Optometry at Nova Southeastern University. She opened her practice,
Ocean Optics, on E. Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach, in 2006. She and her
husband Jeremy are the proud parents of a boxer, Champ.
Dr. Martin, with her assistant, showed statistics on eye care. She highly
recommends seeing a Primary Care Eye Physician once yearly, unless there are
abnormalities that require care more often. If her tests merit it, she will
refer you to an Ophthalmologist for surgery.
She warns that some eye diseases can be detected only by eye exam. If
treated early, some of the diseases can be controlled.
She informed us that less than 46% of the population has annual eye exams,
compared to 85% having dental exams. She also stated that children should
have eye exams by 3-5 years of age.
Dr. Martin warned that Glaucoma is a "Silent thief of sight." About 25% of
the population suffers from this. Alan Kornblau asked if "medicinal use of
marijuana" is a help for eye disease. Dr. Martin stated that eye drops
nightly would keep glaucoma under control, without all the "side effects."
She also stated race, genetics and myopia all play a role in this factor.
Dr. Martin recently gave a one-hour long lecture at our library on the
subject, expounding more on eye disease and care. The bottom line clearly
is seeing that you have your yearly eye "checkup." Thank you, Dr. Martin.
Next week we will have the pleasure of having our Ambassadorial Students
from the city of Delray Beach, who recently returned from our City Sister in
Japan.
The Green Hat exceeds $458.00.
