ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

April 22, 2008

President Kurt Godfrey presided over a well-attended meeting. Our
attendance is still good, despite the loss of the snowbirds. Kurt called on
Ernie Simon to give the invocation, which he did so eloquently.

Then we had "Jivin' Jim" Weatherspoon back with us to lead the singing, with
a tribute to Earth Day, by singing America the Beautiful.

We sang Happy Birthday to Joyce Lunsford, who donated $84.00, and to Bill
Arnst, who donated $73.00. (These two were very generous.)

If you missed last Thursday night's Bingo Fundraiser, you sure missed a
great evening.  We were entertained by the comedy team of Brown and Denkler;
enjoyed a good meal; good company, and many happy people won raffles and
Bingo money. Sue Miller, we thank you for chairing the event, and doing a
superb job. Bob Teninga, we thank you for your assistance. Sue reports we
netted a total of $1,050.00, with 47 attendees. We thank all of you who
generously donated raffle prizes.

Harvey Brown stepped to the podium to welcome five visiting Rotarians.
Among them was Ed Rowen, who will be our 2009-2010 District Governor. Dave
Harden did a make-up at Sunrise Rotary. Candace Etzler did two online
make-ups. We thank each of you for your efforts.

Mike Campbell served as Sergeant at Arms, doing a good job, collecting a
total of $233.00 today.

Mike Campbell reminded us of our Habitat Project, coming up this Saturday at
noon. If you did not sign up, and can help out, please call Mike at
561-819-6070. We need more workers, to meet the challenge of the Boca Club!

Sue Miller introduced our Student of the Month, Brian Williams, who in turn,
introduced his choice of Teacher of the Month, none other than his father,
Russell Williams. Brian's proud mother, Teresa, attended as well.

Brian Williams is an outstanding young man, who will be attending UF,
majoring in Math and Physics. He hopes to obtain a Graduate Degree and work
as a Researcher, or Professor of Science or Math. He had nothing but praise
for Atlantic High School and the friends he has in the IB Program.

Brian is an avid golfer, being the captain of his school's varsity golf
team. He is self-taught single variable calculus. He wrote a research
paper on the fundamentals of string theory. He has a "long string" of
educational awards, and memberships.

Mr. Russ Williams, father of Brian, has been a teacher at Atlantic High
School for twenty-six years. He presently teaches Calculus. He is the golf
coach, and the "Voice of the Eagles," public address announcer for home
football games.

Ernie Simon had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, CEO/President
of Mae Volen Senior Center, Elizabeth Lugo. Ms. Lugo has held this position
for ten years. Serving on the board of directors of Mae Volen are many
well-known names in this area, two of them are Ernie Simon and Leon Weekes
(who was Ernie's guest at our meeting).

Elizabeth Lugo is a native of Iowa. She received her education at FAU, Boca
Raton, FL, with a Bachelor of Social Work.

The Mae Volen Senior Center, Inc. is located at 1515 West Palmetto Park
Road, Boca Raton, FL. They also have a Dementia/Alzheimer's Day Care on the
corner of Lake Ida and Congress Avenues.

This is a very busy center, serving 120-150 people daily. There are 700
members. They have many social outings, play Bridge, take classes, etc.
They even play Bingo! They provide transportation to and from doctors,
grocery stores, etc. They provide "Meals on Wheels," as well as other
in-home services.

Ms. Lugo told us they have 175 volunteers, but need new ones constantly, as
well as welcomed funding. They do rely on grant funding, as well as private
funding. For more information on these wonderful services, visit
www.maevolen.com <http://www.maevolen.com/> , or call 561-395-8920.

Sue Miller informed us that the original date of Atlantic High School's
Scholarship Awards has been moved to May 15.

Next week, we will have the pleasure of seeing students of St. Joseph's
School performing excerpts from Beauty and the Beast.

We now have $518.00 in the Green Hat, since Jim Pignato failed to draw the
Ace!
