ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 6, 2008
President Kurt Godfrey presided over another fabulous meeting, on a near
perfect day in May, in Delray Beach. He light-heartedly took a vote to keep
the remaining snowbirds through May. Leo Phillips gave a beautiful Rotary
invocation. "Jivin' Jimmy" Weatherspoon stepped to the podium and led us in
a couple of favorites, while the elusive Bruce Williams entertained us, then
did his weekly disappearance.
We sang Happy Birthday to snowbird Steve Gutterman, who generously donated
$69.00 to our club. His wife, Ellen, attended to help celebrate his
birthday. Alan Armour was a guest who paid $5.00 to read front page
headlines of a newspaper that was eight years old, but sounded like today's
headlines. He also gave us the news that he would like to become a member
of our club; that was the good news!
Sergeant at Arms Ernie Simon did a good job of collecting a total of $181.00
today. Inga Talmon, trying to redeem herself after her multiple AWOL's,
paid for a banner, but had no one to present it to.
We have two representatives going to our District Conference on Thursday.
They are Governor-elect Betsy Owen and Club Secretary, Sue Miller. We hope
you both have lots of good news to share with us on your return.
This is the second publication of Patrick Robinson for membership.
In the foyer, on display, are white Rotary shirts, bearing the Rotary emblem
embroidered on them. The price of these shirts is $25.00. Check this out
next week.
Alan Kornblau introduced Kevin Coyne, with the Education Foundation of the
Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce. Kevin brought the popular "Pop-up Book,"
depicting Delray Beach to show and sell. All proceeds go to the Education
Foundation of Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is working
toward a $25,000.00 yearly endowment to education.
Our guest speaker was Shelly Weil, (uncle of Kevin Coyne). Shelly is a very
enthusiastic man that is an avid "Ham Radio" operator. We also found out
that our own Bill Talen is also a "Ham Operator," as he rattled off his call
letters to Shelly. Shelly then shared some of his interesting friendships
that he has acquired throughout the world through his radio. They include
many rich (royalty) and famous people; some of them even staying in his
home, when visiting this country.
Shelly's second passion is Boy Scouts of America; he has been a Boy Scout
for sixty-five years. As most of you know, we have a number of Eagle Scouts
within our own club. These are high achievers, earning 21 merit badges.
Only 2% of scouts ever achieve this goal. Shelly shares his love for Ham
Radio with scouts each year. He is associated with the Gulfstream Council.
We now have $580.00 in the Green Hat, with no winner to date.
Next week, we will host the GSE Team. Please be here to share our welcome
to our visitors.
Next Tuesday, 7:30 a. m. we will have our monthly Board of Directors meeting
in the Marilyn Room; all members are welcome to attend.
