Palm Bay Fire Recovery Effort

Many of you may have read or seen news reports on the devastating fire that
completely destroyed 50 homes and left another 100 residences in the Palm
Bay area uninhabitable. As Rotarians our hearts go out to the families and
individuals impacted by this horrible event. We applaud the valiant work of
the local fire and police departments and the Red Cross as they tirelessly
performed the much needed first responder activities. Unfortunately, as the
fires are squelched and the smoke clears, the first responders will soon
evacuate Palm Bay. The hundreds of people in our community whose lives have
been turned upside down by this tragic event will begin to pick up the
pieces and sort through the rubble to rebuild their lives.

Joe Watts, President of the Melbourne Beach Rotary Club, discussed this
situation with several other Rotary Club leaders and the District Governor
to determine an appropriate course of action to aid these families in
distress. After contacting several local agencies that will support the
continued relief effort, we feel that the South Brevard Sharing Center, with
a facility located in Palm Bay minutes from where the devastation occurred
has the capacity to provide assistance to these victims.

The following is a list of services that the Sharing Center will offer
individuals in the Palm Bay community affected by these horrific events:

· Temporary Housing Assistance
· Food
· Clothes
· Personal hygiene Items
· Furniture
· Transportation (including gas cards)
· Financial Assistance to cover the increased Florida Power & Light
(utility bills)
· Immediate prescription replacement
· Screen individuals for long term needs and make referrals to other
agencies as appropriate.

The South Brevard Sharing Center has been named by the United Way as a
designated drop off location for local residents to support the recovery of
the victims of the Palm Bay fire. This organization has assisted individuals
in need locally for over 30 years and will certainly support these victims
in the coming months as they rebuild their lives. We hope that your clubs
will consider joining the Rotary clubs that have already provided financial
support to the Brevard Sharing Center efforts.
