ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 20, 2008
On a hot day in Delray, we were soothed by the wonderful melodies of our own
Bruce Williams. We sure missed Bruce last week. He was out, having an
overhaul (actually a pacemaker installed.) His music was back "up to par,"
just the way he looked!
President Kurt Godfrey did another fine job presiding over our meeting.
Dave O'Connell, who asked for recovery for Andrea Archer and John O'Connell,
gave our invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon was creating happiness and joy
leading our singing group.
Harvey Brown, wading his way through his admirers, stepped to the podium to
welcome Jeff Dennis "the Bahamas Boy" to our club. He announced make-ups
from Deb Ferrell (welcome back, Deb), Marty Phillips, Dr. Stephanie Martin,
Sylvia Pecaro and Harvey Brown. He also got loud booing from the crowd for
our two AWOL's. I'm sure both were away on official city business!
Fred Bonardi stepped to the podium to announce yet another downward turn to
the stock market; it was down 180 points at the time. Oil and gold keep
escalating.
As Sergeant at Arms, Fred Bonardi collected $130.00. Steve Bates is so
happy with his bride of three years, he donated $30.00 to our club, for
their anniversary. Ray Ripley will be leaving us for cooler climate
(hopefully), so he donated $20.00, to get permission to leave.
Bob Teninga announced that a group of our members visited John O'Connell in
Broward Hospital, where he is recovering from a near fatal car accident.
They presented to John and Molly (his wife) a check from our club members
for $2,043.00, to help with some of their multiplying expenses. Next week,
at the meeting, we will pass the hat again, for "dollar day." Please keep
John in your prayers; he is improving, somewhat; keep praying!
Next week, the newest members of "Paul Harris Fellows" will be inducted.
Please try to attend.
Dave Richards left today for Honduras, to help drill for water wells. Keep
this true Rotarian in your thoughts.
There is now $655.50 in the green hat, with no winner! It could be you next
week.
Alan Kornblau had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, Sarah
Martin, Special Events Coordinator for DMC. (Downtown Marketing Cooperative)
Marjorie Ferrer is Executive Director of the DMC. They are responsible for
all the "neat happenings" in Delray Beach.
A few of the upcoming events planned are the big July 4th events. The next
Art and Jazz night will be June 26th. Sarah mentioned this would be the
fifteenth anniversary of our 100-foot Christmas/Holiday Tree.
Sarah informed us of the "Roundabout" free buses that run downtown, to the
beach daily. For more information on the bus schedule, on upcoming events,
or to volunteer, please visit www.delraybeach.com
<http://www.delraybeach.com/> , or drop in at our Delray Beach Chamber of
Commerce to pick up a wealth of information brochures, regarding our busy
"Little Village by the Sea."
The Rotary Club of Delray Beach awarded ten $1,000.00 scholarships to
graduating seniors at Atlantic High School. They were awarded to:
William Hunter Andrea
Fishman
Amanda Adams Daniel
Jespersen
Julie Borg
Unjin Lee
Nadine Cade
Mahfuza Rahman
Chivas Jones
Dorson Dort
The presenters were President Kurt Godfrey and Secretary Susan Miller.
We are proud of, and salute the above students.
