ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 27, 2008
The crowd may be a bit smaller, but the quality is tops! President Kurt
Godfrey presided over yet another top-notch meeting.
Steve Bates read a wonderful tribute to all veterans, regarding Memorial
Day. Sylvia Pecaro followed with a prayer, paying tribute, also. We have a
significant amount of veterans in our membership, who were recognized.
Jimmy Weatherspoon followed up with leading us in "America." As always,
Bruce Williams was there with his beautiful renditions on piano.
Harvey Brown welcomed four visiting Rotarians. He also commended Tom Cook
for his four make-ups, along with Lori Garland, making up online.
Bob Teninga, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $82.00. (There were no
birthdays, or anniversaries.) Bob also reminded us that the last Thursday
of the month is this Thursday...Reading Day at the Achievement Center. The
hours are 9-10, and 3-4 p.m. Please contact Bob if you would like to
participate in this "heart-warming" cause.
Past President Bill Adams had the pleasure of introducing our newest Paul
Harris Fellowship Award recipients. Each one was called to the podium, and
given their Paul Harris pin, certificate, and medallion. This year's
recipients are:
Lyn Huckle, Lew Currier, Candace Etzler, Bob Teninga, Gerry Meeks, Sylvia
Pecaro, Bruce Williams and Bill Adams. (Lyn Huckle just received her second
Paul Harris Fellowship Award.)
Bill Talen, in memory of his beloved wife Caroline, gave two Paul Harris
Fellowships to our club. Bill, we certainly appreciate your generosity.
Last year, there was not a ceremony, but the following became Paul Harris
Fellowship recipients: Mark Denkler (2x's), Dave Armstrong and Kurt Godfrey.
Each remaining member who has paid their dues for the year was recognized
and given a star to place on their name badge, thus becoming "Sustaining
Members." (Included in the dues is a $100.00 gift to Rotary Foundation,
counting toward each members "Sustaining Member" status.)
Sue Miller had the pleasure of introducing three of our current scholarship
recipients from Atlantic High School. They are Mahfuza Rahman, who is going
to attend UF, study Pre-Med; Unjin Lee, who is going to attend U. of
Chicago. Andrea Fishman was the third recipient, who will be studying
Creative Writing. Her "big brother," Kyle, who was a past recipient of our
club, accompanied Andrea. He is attending Harvard, and will be a senior
next year. Their proud parents and grandparents also accompanied them. All
these young people are very enthusiastic, appreciative of our gift, and are
ready to face the "real world." We wish each of them much success in their
endeavors.
I did not win the green hat! It is now over $686.50.
Don't forget to go to our website to view the latest pictures, placed there
by President Kurt Godfrey.
