ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

June 3, 2008

We are now into summer, the snowbirds have made their flight north, but
Rotary Club of Delray Beach still goes on with its outstanding meetings and
accomplishments. President Kurt Godfrey is on his descend; President-elect
Steve Bates is eager to take the reins next month.

Jim Pignato gave the invocation. Then, Jivin' Jim Weatherspoon led us in
song. As always, we thank our dear friend Bruce Williams for entertaining
us with his beautiful renditions.

Steve Bates is celebrating his birthday; he generously donated $54.00.
(Someone commented "he is still a youngster.")

Fred Bonardi gave the stock market report. At time of his report, The Dow
was up 20 points; the NASDAQ up 11 points; the S&P 3 points. Oil was down
to a whopping $126.00, and gold down to $886.00.

Harvey Brown felt slighted, he only got to welcome one visiting Rotarian,
Jennifer Thomason, Osceola District Executive, of Boy Scouts of America. At
this time, she is a member of a Boca Rotary Club. While here, President
Godfrey handed her a check for Boy Scouts for $500.00, on behalf of our
club.

It was announced that John O'Connell is doing a bit better, after his near
fatal accident; he has now been moved from the hospital to a rehab center.
Our club collected $341.00 today, on his behalf. Please keep John in your
prayers.

Mike Campbell, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $129.00 today. Good
job Mike.

The Miracle League is having its games each Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Bucky
Dent Field. If you want to see a miracle, watch the happiness of these kids
as they participate in these games.

Today, we had another of our scholarship recipients visiting to thank us for
her scholarship; she is Amanda Adams. Amanda will be attending UF, where
she will study Journalism and be on the volleyball team.

Steve Bates introduced our guest speaker, Lt. Mark Woods, of the Delray
Beach Police Department. He also serves as Hurricane Preparedness
Commander. He has been with the police department twenty-nine years. He
will take mandatory retirement, soon.

First, he thanked us, and other service clubs in the area for our efforts in
our community. He then proceeded tell us about various ways to prepare
for hurricanes; he advised that everyone pick up the brochure from Publix.
He acknowledged that Publix now has generators, in case they are needed, to
preserve food, and stay open after a disaster. He also stated that most
service stations near I-95, and other major roads have generators. He told
us how the National Hurricane Center is getting better and better with
predicting five day forecasts for hurricanes. They are now pushing the bar
for a seven-day forecast. He states there is no reason to stay in harm's
way. He advises evacuate early, keep gas tank filled, carry cash, pictures,
medications, etc. Above all, use common sense.
