ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
June 10, 2008
President Kurt Godfrey presided over his last board meeting this morning. I
faintly heard a sigh of relief, as it was over. The Board of Directors and
officers of this club thanked Kurt for the outstanding job he has done as
president this year. Many things have been accomplished under his watch.
(There were twenty club members there to bid him farewell.) Similarly,
President-elect Steve Bates is at the starting gate, waiting for his "race;
he is also a winner. We are very fortunate to have such good leaders in our
club.
President-elect Steve Bates, getting into practice, led our noon meeting,
with finesse. Dave Richards gave our invocation. "Jivin' Jim" Weatherspoon
led the singing. (Jim is also doing a good job as Treasurer of our club.)
As always, we are appreciative of the magical music Bruce Williams provides
for us weekly.
We sang Happy Birthday to Marty Phillips who generously donated $72.00 to
our club. We also sang Happy Anniversary to Ernie Simon. He and Norma have
been married 48 lovely years. He donated $48.00 in honor of this. We thank
you and wish all of you the best.
Mike Campbell welcomed our visitors. He had his work associate, Debbie
Kneiss, as his guest. Wayne Brockney had his friend Sid back with us. Pat
Robinson had his son Chris with him today. Make ups were done by Mike
Campbell, Tom Cook and Lori Garland. We thank each of you for your efforts,
helping keep our club among the top in attendance.
This is the first posting for two new prospective members: Sarah Martin,
Downtown Merchants Cooperative, Special Events Coordinator (she was our
speaker a few weeks ago), and Alan Armour, retired stockbroker, and former
member of our club.
Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton collected a grand total of $218.00. Among
this was Marty Phillips' birthday money; Ernie and Norma's anniversary, and
Tom Cook donated $20.00 in honor of the birth of his new grandson.
Announcements:
Joyce Lunsford is looking for information for our Archives. Please help
Joyce out with this project. Bob Teninga is also continuing the reading
program at the Achievement Center. He needs volunteers for this project.
The Miracle League continues its summer games at 2:00 p.m. Saturdays, at
Bucky Dent Park. (See Kurt for info on this.)
Our guest speaker was Michael Hall, Artistic Director of the Caldwell
Theatre Company. Last December, the Caldwell officially moved into their
new facility in the Count de Hoernle Theatre, (three days before their first
performance) at 7901 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL. This new facility
is just barely north of their old facility, which was housed in the Levitz
Plaza for eighteen years.
Mr. Hall had quite an interesting story to tell about how he came to FL. He
was doing summer stock in North Carolina at the time. He was up on a ladder
doing some prop work when a man called up to him and asked if he would be
interested in coming to FL to start a theater. He said he would leave his
card on the bottom of the ladder. Unimpressed by all this, Mr. Hall
nonchalantly put the card in his pocket. When he later received a call from
this man, he found out just who he was. He was Jim Caldwell, founder of
Rubbermaid. His first product was a rubber dustpan; he expanded from there;
the company keeps "bouncing around" with more and more rubber products!
Mr. Caldwell finally convinced Mr. Hall to come to FL in 1974. They were
given space at Boca College (way west of Military Trail). Four years later,
they were bumped out, because the college needed their space. They then
moved to the Boca Mall, for nine years. The mall was torn down; they moved
again.to Levitz Plaza, it is scheduled to be torn down. After all these
years, and drawing large crowds for their performances, the theater has its
own home. The parking garage is yet to be built at the old Levitz Plaza,
but in the meantime, parking and a shuttle bus is available for
performances.
Their next performance is "Pete 'N' Keely, beginning June 20. For tickets,
or more information, call 561-241-7432, or www.caldwelltheatre.com
<http://www.caldwelltheatre.com/> .
This would be a terrific fundraiser for our club.
The green hat holds in excess of $757.50; no winner.
