ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
June 17, 2008
President Kurt Godfrey is about three weeks away from "retirement." Once
again, he presided over another fabulous meeting. Mike Campbell gave a very
meaningful invocation. Then, "Jivin' Jim" Weatherspoon stepped to the
microphone to lead us in singing. We had already experienced lovely
entertainment from Bruce Williams. Bruce, some days you just "outdo
yourself." We thank you so much for your talents.
We sang Happy Birthday to Steve Butera, who donated $45.00 for his birthday.
He also brought along a friend, Charlie Pittman, to help celebrate!
Harvey Brown welcomed our visitors, making each one feel welcome. He also
did a make up. Pat Robinson had his other son, Dan, visiting with us.
Wayne and Donna Brockney said good-bye for the summer. Wayne's friend Sid
Breman was also with them.
Sergeant at Arms Fred Bonardi collected a total of $143.00. Pumping up the
pot was a $50.00 donation from Bill Scottie; he bids us farewell for the
summer.
Fred gave us a not so good stock market report. Oil was stable at $134.00;
gold was $886.00.
This is the second posting for membership for Sarah Martin, DMC Special
Events Coordinator. This is also second posting for membership for Alan
Armour, retired stockbroker (former member of our club).
Our President-elect Steve Bates is enjoying the RI Convention in LA. We
will all be waiting to hear about his adventures.
Bob Teninga announced the Reading Program would take place on June 26, at
The Achievement Center. He needs volunteer readers. The times are 9:00 a.
m. or 4:00 p.m. Please contact Bob to volunteer.
We had two more of our scholarship recipients visiting with us for lunch.
Julie Borg, who was in the IB Program at Atlantic High School, plans to
attend Palm Beach Atlantic University. William Hunter, also in the IB
Program, will be attending Duke University, studying Bio-Medical
Engineering. We are proud to support such bright young students....our
leaders of tomorrow.
Fred Bonardi, doing triple duty, had the pleasure of introducing our guest
speaker, Mary Ann Duggan, Assistant State Attorney. Ms. Duggan came to the
office of the State Attorney for the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit in and for
Palm Beach County, Florida in February of 1983.
She graduated from FL International University with a Bachelor of Science
degree and received her Juris Doctor degree from Nova University Law Center
in 1981.
During her career with the State Attorney's Office, Ms. Duggan has served in
many divisions, including the grand jury unit, homicide unit, major crimes
unit, habitual felony offenders unit, felony trial divisions, intake,
appeals and economic crime divisions.
Presently, Ms. Duggan is chief of the Grand Jury unit and presents all
investigations to the Grand Jury, including all first-degree murder cases
and others. She also handles open homicide investigations, answers legal
questions for law enforcement in any death cases, including undetermined and
accidental deaths. She also handles, on occasion, police shootings
investigations. This very busy person is on call 24 hours a day to assist
law enforcement, as needed.
Ms. Duggan had much interesting information to share. The group responded
with many legal questions, making it very informative for all of us.
The green hat is overflowing, with $779.50 in it, since Kurt failed to pick
the Ace! (Kurt, my friend, your luck is as good as mine is.)
