Rotary Ramblings - June 24, 2008
Called to order by President Kurt after a particularly delightful array of
piano pieces performed by our own Bruce Williams.
Invocation was given by Harvey Brown.
Jimmy Weatherspoon lead us in renditions of "Vive le Rotary" and "If You're
Happy and You Know It"
No birthdays, but Fred Bonardi was reminded of his anniversary of 22 years.
Harvey Brown did double duty with visiting Rotarians and guests. There were
no visiting Rotarians and one Guest, who was considering being a prospective
member. Lot's of makeups. Nancy Owens in the "traditional" way and Deb
Farrell, Jess Sowards and Craig Hammett each did multiple makeups on line.
Fred Bonardi gave a very upbeat stock report - nice to have good news for
change.
Sargeant-at-arms report from Candace Etzler, who very generously did not
call for a pin check although we collected only $83 from scholarships,
Fred's anniversary and the mystery special
President Kurt had Jennifer Thompson of the boy scouts collect the $125
raised at the last meeting to help out with boy scout camp.
Bob Teninga made a couple of announcements - Achievement Center for Children
and Families this Thursday, June 26th, 9am and 3pm. Call him to let him
know you're going to be there.
Also, Kurt is trying to put together a Projects Committee to find new
projects we can get involved in. Anyone interested in being on this
committee should notify Bob.
Fred Bonardi introduced our speaker, Michelle Hillery from the Palm Beach
Film Commission. She's a graduated from Palm Beach Community college and
started at the Commission as an intern. She is the Director of Operations
and Programs for the commission, which entails a variety of things. She is
involved in promoting Palm Beach County as a still, film and production
destination. The commission is funded thru federal tax dollars, as is the
Tourist Development Council. Film and TV bring producers, directors and
film crews here to do location shoots. They stay in our hotels and utilize
our facilities. The Commission facilitates approximately 200 permits per
year. Large scale productions such as Bad Boyz II filmed in Delray Beach,
make up only 10% of their activities. Also are event based and destination
based such as the Delray Beach Film Festival, Palm Beach International Film
Festival and the Spring Bling held the past two years in Riviera Beach. In
addition, they also have film equipment available for loan to high schools,
and colleges for the students. They have a regular newsletter available by
email and can be signed up for at the website www.pbfilm.com
<http://www.pbfilm.com/> The Commission was started as a result of Burt
Reynolds continued involvement in Palm Beach County films, and he is still
active in the Burt Reynolds museum and gives scholarships to film students,
which are presented by Michelle Hillery on his behalf.
Kurt made another announcement. The new Rotary magazine has an article on
Miracles League on pages 38 and 39.
The green hat had $805.50, but Bob Teninga did not pull the ace.
Respectfully submitted,
Sue Miller
