ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
July 1, 2008
Today was the first day of our new Rotary year. (Does this make Steve Bates
president, or is he still president-elect until next week's official
installation?) Whatever the case may be, Steve did a fine job presiding
over the meeting today. Next week will be our official installation of new
officers for the year 2008-2009. Please attend, and bring along a friend.
The food will be especially impressive for this occasion (prime rib,
people).
I want to take this opportunity to thank Kurt Godfrey for a fantastic job as
our president this past year. Kurt totally dedicated himself to the office
of President of Rotary Club of Delray Beach. We all love you and thank you
for a job well done.
Bill Adams gave a lovely invocation. Then, "Jivin' Jim" Weatherspoon led us
in patriotic songs, as Bruce Williams accompanied on piano. Bruce keeps us
entertained each week, as we dine; we so appreciate you.
Harvey Brown stepped to the podium to greet guests. He had quite an easy
job today. The count was down, but the quality was top-notch. Dave Harden
and Mike Campbell did make ups. (Steve Butera tried to do a make up, but
his online experience would not cooperate; better luck next time, Steve.)
Gerry and Ann Meeks are celebrating 18 years of marital bliss. He donated
$18.00 for the occasion. We wish you many happy returns.
Fred Bonardi shyly strolled to the podium, wearing full armor
(figuratively). The stock market had fallen 150 points, as he approached.
Oil was $144.00; gold $950.00; enough said!
Fred did better as Sergeant at Arms, collecting $75.00 from a small crowd.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for Pres. (?) Steve
Bates to install our first new member for the year. She is none other than
Sarah Martin, Director for Special Events, Downtown Merchants Cooperative.
Her sponsor is Kurt Godfrey. (Check our website for photos.)
Deb Ferrell had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, a friend of
many of us, Christine King, owner of Get Fit. Christine started this
business eleven years ago, catering to private clients for a number of
years. Four years ago, she decided to go public, offering her "get fit"
program to all of us.
Christine's story starts twelve years ago. While grooming for a fitness
competition, she and some friends decided to go jet skiing. This turned
into a real trauma for Christine. There was an accident, while on the Jet
Ski; she was critically injured. She was flown to a special hospital unit.
Her lower lumbar burst; she had crushed vertebrae. Rods were inserted in
her back, etc. During Christine's recovery period, she vowed, that if she
should get out of that bed and walk, "I am going to change my career - to
help others." Well, this determined lady got out of that bed; she walks
today, helping others. She walks with a slight limp, wearing special shoes,
but the spirit to help others is there. She is an amazing example of what a
person can do if they have the will to.
In 2006, Christine was voted Chamber of Commerce Small Business Person of
the Year. In 2007, the Sun-Sentinel voted her Palm Beach County Small
Business Leader. Christine, we congratulate you; you've come a long way
from that fateful day twelve years ago.
Get Fit is located in the Executive Plaza, on S. Federal Highway, between
10th Street and Linton Blvd. You will receive royal treatment and a
personal trainer.
Next week: (July 8, noon) Installation of Officers for 2008-2009. Board of
Directors meeting, 7:30 a. m. Marilyn Room, Ellie's Diner.
Green hat: $829.50; no winner!
