Welcome back Sam Aldorfer.
Christina Dombrosky brought lots of Argentine banners fromthe different clubs she visited. Sheshared some of the customs with us. Forexample, her host club – does a “this year in history” trivia game at themeetings with a question asked such as “on this day in …. Year, ….. did ….. –who can name that person”. It’s kind offun and different. Her host club met fordinner, which in Latin countries is very late and very relaxed (ie cocktails at9, dinner at 9:30 in courses, etc.) Shealso talked a little about the pen pal project that Dave O’Connell’s daughter(a teacher at Poinciana Elementary) is going to help with on our end. Christina will be our program for next week,so don’t miss out on hearing about her adventures in Buenos Aires.
Bob Teninga introduced Stephanie Shipley, Executive Directorof the Delray Beach Historical Society, who gave a very informative slidepresentation on the relocation of the 1908 Hunt House from its originallocation on Federal Highwayto its new location at the historical site on Swinton in November, 2007. The ceiling and walls were the original 1908,but they still faced numerous challenges. The building was not level. Theyadded a bunker-like structure to the house to house the archives (which havebeen housed at the Cornell Museum. This structure is climate controlled andweather proofed. The house was renamedthe Ethel Sterling Williams Historical Learning Center in honor of theco-founder and first president of the Delray Beach Historical Society, who alsoknew the Hunts (the original owners of the house). Delray Beach Historical Society news and events – 2/6-2/8/09 – the Annual Antique Show and Sale at the CommunityCenter. They received a grant from thePalm Beach County Cultural Society to put on two events for children, whichwere very successful. There is a newhistoric marker on A1A just east of Bay Street, which was sponsored by the Charles NeffFamily and is therefore, named the Neff Family Historical Marker. The historic trolley tours are still quitepopular attracting visitors as well as Delray residents.
